A few miles out of Coniston, heading towards Ambleside, there is a left turn, signposted Tilberthwaite. Follow this narrow road to the carpark, next to the stream and a bridge. This is Tilberthwaite and is the start of a walk to Tilberthwaite Gill, following the beck. Many high fell walks begin here, also, including Helvellyn and Wetherlam and is a popular spot, even in Winter. We watched people heading off on hikes in the freezing cold, snow falling. I sincerely hoped they were all suitably equipped as there was snow on the fell tops and we could see it being blown around like a snow storm. It's a lovely place to just stop for a picnic, have a wander round and admire the lovely scenery. There is some interesting dry slate walling in a sheep fold just across the road from the park. Looks very new and most impressive. We were here on a bitterly cold day in March 2007. So cold it was snowing, with an Arctic wind. I hadn't thought to pack my gloves so my hands quickly froze as I rapidly snapped our surroundings with our new 12 optical zoom camera. Not the best of days to try it out!!! I do remember coming here many years ago with my family for summer outings where we would mess about in the stream for hours on end. Leave a Comment
