Black Bull Inn: 16th Century coaching inn
While looking for a place to park on a busy Easter week Wednesday, we spotted a couple of spots behind a pub on the main road through Coniston. It was signed for patrons only, others being charged 20 pounds for the day. We were hungry anyway so we decided to be a patron.
The Black Bull Inn advertises itself as dating back to a 16th century coaching inn and is a traditional pub. They are still a hotel with 15 rooms but the pub was our destination for lunch. They have a microbrewery on site as well, the beer named after the Campbell family, Bluebird Ale which we tried and deemed it quite good.
The pub has a very good menu with traditional and not so traditional food. The portions are large and there are vegetarian options as well. The pub atmosphere feels like an old pub with old fashioned furniture
Favorite Dish: I had the haddock which was enormous, fresh, flakey and with a lovely crisp beer batter. The chips were fantastic too. My partner had a burger though was warned that it was wild boar. He tried it anyway, with bacon and cheese and said it was awesome.
Black Bull Inn: Best Pub/Brewery Beer
Pretty extensive menu for pub food. But the beer is awesome. They make a big deal about the Bluebird Ale which won lots of awards. But if you like a nice brown ale with lots of flavor get the Old Man Ale. Soooo good. You can buy bottles to bring home there. They also have a to-go container where they put 2 pints in a milk type carton. Just be sure not to grab it from the top as it is a bit flimsy. How great to bring back 2 awesome pints back to your hotel!

Great food great value
This restaurant or cafe is very good. It has quite an extensive menu ranging from the very basic to quite complicated dishes.
The service is excellant and the staff are only to pleased to help. Once inside and you get your food you get the feeling that this plase could be a little expensive, it is not. The price is very good from what I have seen here and the food is of very high quality. Admitted we only went for a breakfast but it was one of the best I have had.
Favorite Dish: Big breakfast fo a hungry lad ; )
