    Sir Donald Campbell

Near the office of Ullswater Steamers is a stome to commemorate the achievement of Sir Donald Campbell who broke the World Water Speed Record on 23 July 1955. His Hydroplane K7 reached a record 202.32 mph.

He later was killed on Loch Ness trying to beat his own record.

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Steamer [now diesel] trips run throughout the year. From 31 October -31 January; four sailings per day; 9 April to 4 September 9 sailings daily; 27 March - 8 April and 5 Sept to 30 October 6 sailings per day.
Boats leave about 9.45 and 1hr 45 minutes thereafter. Passengers can do the round trip , or get off and catch later boats at Howtown and Pooley Bridge. Many people take one section and then walk back.

Cost Family £30.75 [2 adults and 2 children]
    Child £6.35
    Adult £10

The trip is great , showing the splendour of the mountains around the lake, the variety of watercraft, and the tranquility.

Helvellyn Country Kitchen is a clean well-decorated cafe with plenty of seating situated next to Ullswater Beck. The walls are used to display paintings by local artists which you can also buy.

Their coffee is freshly ground and they offer a range of flavoured syrups. I opted for the gingerbread which was delicious.

    Would recommend.

    Favorite Dish: The gingerbread latte.

We arrived by car and drove along the lake. Finding somewhere to park was difficult, until we managed to get a slot near the Pier for the steamers.
To get around Ullswater, the ideal means is by boat whether the Ullswater steamer, yacht or canoe.
Many people prefer to combine one of these methods and walk the rest of the way.
Or motorcyclists travel in groups, roaring through the peaceful environment.
