    By The Lake: Picnic

by steventilly Written Sep 16, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A great place for a picnic - just look at the views! And the gently sloping grassy bank is just great for sitting & lying on too, And it's a natural time for a break , as it's about 1/2 way into the walk to Rydal.
Just bear in mind that there's still some walking to be done, and there's no loo until you get to the pub at Rydal. And that might be shut, if you're unlucky...

Favorite Dish: Sarnies, crisps, cakes, pop.

    Sabs & Sue, Sans Shoes.

Potted Out Cafe: Sit outside by the river

    by northeast80 Written Apr 19, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is the sister cafe of the Potting Shed a little further away, this one is on the main high street opposite a mini arcade (where we bought some gingerbread to eat with our coffee).
We only got a coffee here, service was good; they brought our order out to us quickly and the coffee was tasty too.
The setting was beautiful; we sat outside righht by the river looking over to fields. The coffee was more expensive than usual though.
They tend to do local British food and Italian.

Favorite Dish: I believe it used to be called Williams of Grasmere as the large stone says in their front garden.

The Rowan Tree: Great Veggie Restaurant

by steventilly Updated Apr 4, 2011

Absolutely wonderful veggie restaurant, set by the river overlooking the church in the centre of Grasmere. There's a nice outdoor area, and a pleasant "rustic" interior.
The food is 100% veggie, and more in the keeping of "wholefood" too - good, no-nonsense home cooking. For some reason they don't shout about their veggieness - the website makes no mention of it at all, and only a glance at the menues kinda gives it away. Maybe they feel some people avoid veggie places? Well, I wouldn't avoid this one if I were you, it's lovely.
Booking most definitely recommended for evenings. During the day it's just "come in if you can get in".

Favorite Dish: Menu changes often, so it's really hard to say. I've never been remotely disappointed with anything I ever had here.
The thing that sticks in the mind most was the brown bread ice cream, which was a pure delight. This was way back in the days of their old premesis and it was only an occasional dish then, and I don't know if they even do it any more.

    Rowan Tree, Grasmere
