Hanging on a Line...

by nickandchris

I don't suppose this occurs in Cumbria alone, hanging out the dead moles on a fence, but it isn't a particularly nice spectacle. We came across this in the north of the county, not so far from Brampton. I know moles create havoc in the fields but I'm not well up on country matters. All the land around appeared to be used only for sheep and maybe cattle, but no agriculture. Do moles actually cause damage to animals, carry diseases etc or is it that they totally undermine the land? Whatever, I really don't know why their poor dead bodies have to be displayed as they were. And to whom?

True Brits...

Not strictly speaking specific to only Cumbria but we do seem to have our fair share of BBQ's in the rain. WE WILL HAVE A BBQ!!! Once the thing is lit, there's no going back. Good job umbrellas were invented.

True saying or Old Wives Tale ??

by into-thin-air

In Cumbria we have a saying – If you can see the Isle Of Man it is going to rain – (If you can’t see it, it is probably already raining !!)Well I was on Calterton Beach today and the Ile of Man was Plain as day – and before I got the 6 miles back home it was raining – coincidence or ……….

Laying Poppies, Tribute or Litter ?

by into-thin-air

This year there was quite a debate about the tradition of laying poppies at The War Memorial on the top of Great Gable on Remembrance Sunday. This tradition has gone on for Many years with sometimes up to 1.000 people climbing the 2947 foot summit of Great Gable in the middle of winter on Remembrance Day to pay respects and lay poppies. The Fell and Rock Climbing Club who erected this War Memorial and who conduct the service there objected to the laying of poppies, So a number of local people volunteered to climb to the top on a regular basis to keep am eye on the situation and remove any poppies that are starting to degrade. The Service is at 11.00 on the Sunday nearest to 11-11, so 5 weeks later I went up to The War Memorial and took these picsSo, what do you think – are they a Tribute or Litter ?

Dancing around the May-Pole

by into-thin-air

May-Day, Dancing around the May-Pole in Nether Wasdale, This is something that I used to do more than 40 years ago and little has changed !! The May-Pole was erected to celebrate the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria, so Long Long before the socialists highjacked 1st of May for there own holiday it was still an important day in Wasdale !!Also there are Children's Sports, Tombola stall, raffle and "Teas" served in the Old School, I took my Mother this year, She was a former pupil of Nether Wasdale, the school closed down in 1931 !!A Great day out and another Real piece of Cumbrian Traditional life

Fish n Chips

by VickiJ

Ok, so i am not 100% whether this is a Cumbria custom tip or just a tip for those who visit us 'up north' but you gotta go to a chip shop (and eat them out the paper - no plates or cutlery!) my favourite is chips and gravy or chips and curry sauce or chips and mushy peas! I dont like fish but Jamie always gets battered haddock with his! Yum yum, always get plenty of salt and vinegar on too! Cheese Patties are good too, they are like battered mashed potato balls (the size of your head in some chips shops) with melted bits of cheese inside!

Cumberland Sausage Anyone?

by VickiJ

When visiting cumbria, make sure to try the cumberland sausage (best served with mash and gravy!!!) It is like a spicy sausage - and really nice! (If it's been made by Richard Woodall, then that cumberland sausage was appointed by the Queen!! Yum yum!
