Rose and Crown / Farmers Arms: Friendly locals

by PippaFoxen Updated Jun 8, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you find yourself in Ulverston, Cumbria, make your trip happier by throwing away any expectations of wild, late night clubbing right out of the window. It's just not an option. Settle, instead for an evening (or even an all day session) in the town centre pubs.

Most locals are friendly and sociable, most nights are lively, (Wednesdays particularly, which is live music night in many of the pubs). The food in the Farmers is good, especially the seafood. In winter, when there isn't much else to do, get round the fire in Sid's Room in the Rose and Crown. In the summer almost all the town centre pubs have a beer garden.

Chat to the locals - it's an isolated place to live, so anything or anyone a bit different goes down well.

Dress Code: In Ulverston pubs, generally speaking, dress however you like. No one really notices or cares.

Whitehaven: ..the only place to go?

by VickiJ Written Apr 20, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The place where we go out is Whitehaven. Whitehaven has many pubs, bars and one club....but most places are open till late!
Whitehaven has a Weatherspoons, which most town have nowadays but there are a few more 'fun bars' that people go to such as Sennys, Blue Bar and Shakers (a cocktail bar!)

Dress Code: The dress code around Whitehaven is pretty casual, no caps but i think that you can get in most places with jeans and trainers for boys (the girls get more dressed up though!)

Bars on Botchergate: Places to go

by davidpetch Written May 3, 2005

William Rufus - one of the best, mixed people
Wetherspoons - large bar, good for chatting
Bar Code - Quite a few Pyaps in here.
    Griffin - Footballers pub
Mood - Good nightclub, 2 dancefloors
The Office - expensive (so i'm told)
Walkabout - don't eat the steak as it is half fat and the cockney manager with the fake aussie accent has an attitude problem. Good for socialising though.

Plenty of places to check out. Give it a go.

Dress Code: Dress smart, but casual.
    Definately NO trainers.
Please no Chavs. Carlisle has enough as it is, lol.

  • Wainwrights Inn: New Years' Eve in Langdale

by ClareBear Written Dec 28, 2004

There aint much else to do in Langdale in the evening other than walk to the local pub Wainwrights. I have spent many an NYE (new years eve) in this pub. Firstly let me tell you the locals do not really like the people who stay on the Langdale Estate (I believe this group bought every pub, empty house and spare land in the area).
Every year on NYE they have a pub quiz, which is quite lively considering where you are. The customers range from staff from the Langdale Estate, to people who have rented cottages around this quite area to people like myself who refuse to pay £100 a ticket for enterainment at the Langdale Hotel Complex

Dress Code: Walking boots are a must or everyone will think you are mental - comments to me and my friends included - well they are not walkers are they!! You dont look like you know much about the lakes. Dont get me wrong I did not have my clubbing gear on or anything, Jeans and a funky tshirt - but bear in mind you are in the Lakes and fashion sense could be looked upon as limited (I am from Liverpool where you generally get very very dressed up on Saturday Nights!)- Versace is unheard of and Sprayway takes it's place. If it aint a Berhaus then dont wear it YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
