Theres plenty of shops in Bakewell, but you cant go expecting large city style shopping. What you will find are smaller craft work type of shops...they can be quite interesting and sell a multitude of items. There are a few little alley ways with some more of these style shops tucked away.
Antiques appear to be popular in this area as well, so if you like this type of thing keep your eyes open.
What to buy: Theres lots of things you can get here....from ornaments to clothing. There is one shop in particular that is high value and good quality..if you visit Bakewell, look out for the main supermarket ( only one as far as I know ) it is just around the corner from this........it sells all sorts of ornaments that can be quite good........for example I bought a Chinese vase about 20 cm`s tall.....in my home city same item retailing at around 30-35 pounds......I picked same one up in Bakewell brand new not seconds or anything for £7.50.....being a northerner " I was dead chuffed " and now takes place in my chinese themed house.
What to pay: Not a fortune...clothes are probably the most expensive items......stuff like fleece jumpers etc etc...if youve got the money fine.........but personally they seem a little expensive to me for what they are.

There are a number of Bakewell pudding shops in Bakewell, however, this shop is, in the main, accepted to be the original, where the first ever pudding was made.
The pudding shop is set in a seventeenth Century building and sells not only their own, delicious puddings, but also other delicacies such as preserves, pasta and sauces.
There is also a restaurant on the first floor which offers tasty snacks and meals made from local produce.

Monday to Saturday : 08:30 - 18:00

This shop has undergone a significant expansion and now sells a wonderful array of jams, pickles and conserves. It features it's own locally produced fruit and vegetables and has extended it's bakery range. Another section of the extension has been dedicated to bottled beers, lagers and wines.
Of course, it maintains its excellent high standard on Bakewell puddings but also has an extensive section of local crafts. A second serving counter has been introduced to the rear of the shop where it is possible to purchase bakery items for consumption at a new outdoor seating area.
What to buy: A medium Bakewell pudding to take home and a small one to snack on whilst you're still in Bakewell!!!
What to pay: Very reasonable prices for their Bakewell puddings. Locally produced, specialist jams, conserves and pickles are slightly more expensive - I have yet to try my Caramelised Onion Chutney which I bought in July 2012 but will update once I have done so.

Masson Mill is a rather ugly old spinning mill that is now a shoppers delight. Do not be put off by the ugliness of the building - there are four floors of shopping here and goods on sale range from clothing to household goods to candles - something for everyone. The prices are good too with many well known brands heavily discounted.
There is a very good restaurant and children's play area. Very good disabled access to all floors with a good sized lift. One complaint - you have to pay to park (50p for 2 hours) which is not really acceptable when you are here to shop!

Museum entrance: Adult £2.50, Child (5-16) £1.50, Family £6.50, Concessions £2.00
It was too late for us to see the museum when we arrived as it had closed so I cannot comment on this part of the mill.
What to buy: Anything and everything - there is a ex catalogue department on the ground floor and on the day we were there evening dresses for £5 were on sale.
What to pay: Heavily discounted on most lines by up to 70%.

Lots of little back street shops ranging from the expensive to the reasonable. Well worth taking a look especially if you are looking for gifts to take back home.
What to buy: Lots of arts and crafts type of items to suit most tastes.

Over 100 shop units make up this mall style shopping centre. It is easy to find and reach and parking is easy although out in the open although the shops are in colonnades and it is possible to keep dry even on a wet day.
Major brands includes Cadburys, Roman Originals, Marks and Spencers, Next, Denby and Revlon amongst many others.
Catering is good and the food court has something for everyone. The facilities are good and it is very disabled friendly - Marks and Spencers was the only difficult shop to move around in a wheelchair.
What to buy: Bargains in all shops - good value clothing and shoes.
What to pay: Everything is reduced by up to 50% but remmeber all lines are discontinued , surplus stock in major city stores or seconds. The labels and notices in the shops generally explain this. However guarantees on say electrical goods still stand.

Bakewell Market is a must see if you are in the town on a Monday. It is an open air market and reasonably large for such a small town but there are some real bargains on sale here. You can buy anything from carpets to CDs to cheese to Indian food and I have never seen so much variety in such a small market.
There is a smaller market near the Spar shop on a Saturday. Bakewells first recorded market was in 1254.

With lots of outdoor activities in the area, Bakewell has a number of outdoor supplies shops. On a visit in July 2012, I visited the Mountain Warehouse shop as I had visited one of their sister shops in Skipton a couple of weeks earlier and wanted to check out their sale which was continuing and included some really good bargains.
Mountain Warehouse stocks a range of outdoor brands, including Berghaus, Karrimor, etc. as well as their own brand, Mountain Life.
The Bakewell store holds a full range of stock including men and women's outdoor clothing, tents, sleeping bags, hiking boots and a range of outdoor accessories.
What to buy: During their sale, their outdoor ladies T-shirts were BOGOF (buy one, get one free) and I stocked up with four new, fun designs!
What to pay: During sale times, you can pick up some real bargains.

A feast for the eyes - and later the lips!!
This shop has SUCH a range for cheeses, meats (both uncooked and deli-style cooked), pickles, jams, conserves, baked goods, basketware, etc. - surely no one can enter this shop and leave without buying anything!
The selection of flavoured cheeses in this shop will surpass most imaginations, whilst the jams, pickles and preserves must be able to satisfy all tastes in their varieties.
What to buy: If cheese is your fancy, then this is the Bakewell shop of your dreams!!! You can buy all sorts of original and flavoured cheeses. I bought a wedge of Innkeepers Choice (a cheddar flavoured with pickled onion and chives - which has proved to be delicious) and a sticky toffee cheddar (which I have yet to try).
I also bought a Homity Pie which has leeks, potato, eggs and cheese in a shortcrust case - unfortunately, this was a little disappointing, I would have liked a better cheese topping.
From the pickles, jams and conserves selection I chose a Red Onion Marmalade (by Bracken Hill Fine Foods) which has proven to be a great accompaniment to cheese dishes, and the Homity Pie! This is a great savoury accompaniment.
The shop is stocked with items from both the proprietor and surrounding farms and pocket industries.
What to pay: As always with such specialist shops, prices are higher than supermarkets, but you're also getting products that are unavailable in such places and are of great quality!
