The nearest airport to Derby is Nottingham East Midlands (which is neither in nor near to Nottingham!). It serves several budget airlines as well as mainstream ones.
It's a small airport, with just one terminal. There are places to eat/drink/shop, but most of these are beyond security; there is only one cafe in the departures area.
There are good onward transport links, though no railway connection. The airport website will give you details.
There is also plenty of parking, although it is best to book online in advance for best prices (the earlier you book the cheaper the price).
The biggest advantage of such a small airport is that (other than at certain times in the UK school holidays) queues for security and immigration/baggage reclaim are rarely lengthy.

The Spondon Flyer is the best way to get into Derby City centre by bus as it is a direct route from all areas in Spondon. It is £1.50 per adult for a single ticket or £2.90 for a return. They run every 15 minutes and it only takes 10 minutes to get into the city centre. It is an excellent and cheaper way to get to town rather than using your car and paying for car parking which is normally £1.50 for 2 hours.

Derby has good train links with most major cities in the UK with Virgin, Midland Mainline and Central trains covering routes like London, Glasgow and Cardiff plus nearer destinations like Nottingham, Stoke and Birmingham. There is also a shuttle bus to East Midlands Airport that takes around 30 minutes. The recommended minimum connection time at Derby is 10 minutes.
There is an ATM in the booking hall and left luggage facilities that are open from 9.15am to 3.45pm. Buses and taxis both stop just outside the station.

Seven Two Taxis Ltd provide a 24 hour service in and around the Derby area with metered taxis. If you see a bright yellow cab then it is likely to be one of theirs. I found them pretty efficient and quick to arrive when I used them and the phone number is easy to remember, 01332 72 72 72.
Alternative taxi firms are Albatross Cars who can be contacted on 01332 345345 and Intime Cars on 01332 342434.
