The Steam train between Buckfastleigh to Totnes, via Staverton is a definate must if you are in the area. It takes you through some beautiful countryside & along the River Dart.
This stretch of the line was opened in 1872 but was never particularly profitable with the ownership changing hands several over the past 130 years. The carraiges are wonderful & take you back to a bygone age, there is also an observation carriage at the rear of the train.
The below site gives you fares and timetables plus special events.
As with the train, Buckfastleigh train station itself has been kept in the style it would have been originally in the 1870s.
The old ticket office & fireplace, the station master in his traditional uniform, old signs & fashioned luggage piled high on the platform. To add to the effect were these beautiful cars parked outside. Even if you dont want to go on the train the station itself is worth a look
The beautiful River Dart flows alongside Buckfastleigh, it is a nice depth & good flow from here to Totnes only 5 miles downstream, makes it a popular stretch for Kayakers. Unless you are are very experienced it is recommended you start below the weir.
There is a lovely walk heading up river starting from the train station carpark (free parking)
