Beginners and more experienced horse riders all agree that riding across Dartmoor is hard to beat. You can ride out on the open moor - provided that it’s common land . trot along woodland trails and bridleways, or follow in the hoofprints of ancient medieval traders along historic byways linking towns and villages. If you don’t have your own horse, or you.re a novice in the saddle, there are first-class stables listed overleaf offering you a good horse, tuition and an experienced guide.

    Ride with Moor Care
    Ride only where you’re allowed.
Be prepared, with right equipment and clothing including a helmet.
    Be considerate of other users.
Avoid riding fast on wet ground as hooves can soon turn fragile moorland into mud.

Equipment: You can rent gear on location - but if you have your own - bring it and don't forget your riding cap.

I have to admit I am not a horseriding fan myself, but I have a friend who has been up on to the moors riding many times & she loves it. I can certainly see the attraction beautiful open moorland, you dont have to far from the road to be off the beaten track. You can take lessons or just go off riding.

There are many riding schools to choose from up here. Check out the link below for contacts.

    Equipment: All equipment is provided

You see many walkers all over the Moors, from the hardcore with walking poles, gaters, OS maps & compass who head off in to the depths of the moors to those whe stroll up to the Tors and along the river foorpaths.

There are plenty of organised walks from 2 hours up to 6 and even night hikes. Check out the website below for organised walks also there is a free Dartmoor newpaper you can pick up from the information centres scatterd over the moor. In there is advertised many organised walks with other organisations.
