The Helicopter Service To Lundy Island

The tranquil and unspoilt Island of Lundy lies about 10 miles north of Hartland Point, in the Bristol channel. During the milder weathered months the main means of access to the island is by its supply ship, the MS Oldenburg, however during the winter (November to March) the island can only be accessed by helicopter.

The helicopter flies from its helipad just off the road from Hartland village (TOWN!) as it approaches Hartland Point. There are two flights a week, on Fridays and Mondays (weather permitting), with a journey time of about 7 minutes and costs about 87 GBP return (2008 prices).

    The 319 Bus From Barnstaple

by johngayton Written Nov 11, 2008
    The 319 at Bideford

There is no public transport around Hartland Peninsula as such but there are 5 daily buses (Mondays to Saturdays but not Sundays) from Barnstaple to Hartland village (TOWN!) itself. This is the 319 Stagecoach Devon bus which is the rural service taking in Bideford, Abbotsham, Woolsery and Clovelly with a total journey time of about one and a half hours for the 23 miles that the distance would be if the bus took the most direct route.

Even though the bus does meander somewhat around the villages this doesn't make for a tedious journey as the landscapes, the occasional glimpses of seascapes and the stretch of the Torridge Estuary all make for a visually interesting trip - the bus is usually a double-decker and so from upstairs you get the grandstand views.

Once you arrive at Hartland, which is pretty centrally-located, everywhere else in the peninsula is easily walkable with nowhere being much more than an hour or so away on foot.

The best value return fare from Barnstaple is the Dayrider ticket for about 3.40 GBP which allows unlimited travel for the day on all Stagecoach services.

Tel number below is Stagecoach's main office at Exeter.
