In Devon Even The Sparrows Are Civilized!

by johngayton

At the bottom of our pub garden we have a very slightly ramshackle bird table (Ha! That's another job on my "To Do" list but having said that I kinda like it as it is - ach, but that's a digression!). Back to the point: One of my favourite simple little pleasures in life is watching the birds toing and froing around the garden with regular visitors including Robbie and Roberta (our pair of robins who flirt outrageously and keep disappearing into the bushes!), a few wagtails, swifts during the summer, and a small flock of sparrows who usually appear around lunchtime. The amazing thing about our sparrows here in Devon is just how civilized they are. They arrive en-masse and gather in our bushes, chirping and playing and then when it comes to eating take it in turns, one at a time, to visit the table, picking up a titbit and flying off with it and allowing the next to follow suit.Ha! Snug Bars

by smalldevonian

When entering a country pub in Devon go to the snug bar (you will know the one by the cigarette smoke and banter)It WILL go silent as you enter, ignore this.Order your tipple/meal and sit down somewhere near the locals, catch their eye and smile, then carry on enjoying your drink/food.Eventually one of the locals will say"How are you my buddy?" or someting similar. Now you have drinking partners for the rest of your holiday who can tell you where to go and where to avoid!!

Cockington Poem

by MarvintheMartian

Nested among the hills of Devon,Beneath the blue eternal heaven,What homely sight to gaze upon,Ye anceint village of Cockington.Neath thatched roof the 'cotter rests,Surrpounded by fair nature's best,There to recall and muse upon,The distant past of Cockington. Here flower bedecked the month of June,Here rill and stramlet blend in tune,All nature sings to every oneThe praises of sweet Cockington. The village smithy still is there,The smith has long since ceased to care,Who rings a merry tune uponThe anvil at old Cockington. The grand old church with Norman tower,The bells are calling at this hour,The villagers to join in one,To sing their praise at Cockington.I've wandered far across the seas,And then returned once more to see,That never have I come uponA place more fair than Cockington.Although we change and slowly pine,And each year leaves its furrowed line,Grand grows the scene as time...
