This is one of my favourite restaurants anywhere. Platters is a Plymouth institution: both the fish and chip takeaway and the next door formica-tabled restaurant. There is no pretentiousness here whatsoever, no bookings are taken and the menu offers fish, fish, fish or fish with some seafood options thrown in!!
This place fills up as soon as the door opens and if you want to eat by yourself you will usually find yourself sharing a table - and invariably with someone interesting.
Service is friendly, informal and there is a real buzz even on a midweek evening. Whilst the restaurant has its own licence with very reasonably priced wines you can always ask for a pint of excellent draft Bass to be delivered from the Dolphin pub next door
Favorite Dish: Fish! Usually served either in batter or plain grilled with home made chips, ask for the chef's recommendation which will quite often have just arrived pretty much straight from a local boat through the front door - it doesn't come any fresher than this. Last time I ate I had a plateful of John Dory fillets, perectly grilled and a bill of about 14 quid (GBP), unbeatable for flavour and price.

Cap'n Jaspers is a relatively modern addition to the Barbican dining scene (using "dining scene" in the broadest possible term) and has rapidly become another local institution. The Cap'n's is simply a takeaway burger hut with a couple of chain-link tables sitting on the harbour in the centre of the Barbican but for cheap and cheerful street food is pretty much unbeatable. Service is swift and friendly, order your meal, get it, help yourself to the wide selection of relishes and find somewhere to sit and eat or eat on the hoof as you head for the next pub!
Favorite Dish: Well recommended is the flagship special - The Jasperizer: A 4oz bacon burger atop a 4oz cheese burger with fried onions for the princely sum of 3.60 GBP. Or try the "half-yard" of hot dog. Pile on the relishes, YUM!
Website below is worth a visit for the history of Cap'n Jaspers.

This place is so important to the local population that when it was threatened with being demolished in the name of commercial progress, a group of Royal Marines stationed in the nearby Citadel ran down to this local piece of history and pushed it until it was out of the way, and safe.
This food outlet is important to all of the locals in that it not only serves up traditional fast food at good prices, but also demonstrates the local sea-food.
This place is, as it claims, World famous, as you might expect from something that is based in a port and is a massive hit with the nautical personnel here. I have spoken to both Americans (In New York and in Plymouth) and Australians asking after this place!
This is the place to be at all hours of the day. During meal times, in the evening with the nearby bars busy or in the small hours of the day with the local fishermen heading off for the daily catch.
Favorite Dish: 'The Half-Yard'
This Hot Dog contains too much to eat - almost. It has the usual contents, but stuffed over-brimming into a half-yard length roll! Completion of this mammoth task is rewarded with a badge, which is a symbol of your entrance into the pretigious 'Half-Yard Club'. Cap'n Jaspers has an international selection of relishes / condiments to try with their dishes.
'The Jasperizer'
Three tiers of beefburger, cheese, rashers of bacon, a fantastic taste. Essentially a triple burger, try it. Great during a good night out.
If these do not appeal, customise something when they are not over busy.

Their website claims that The Eastern Eye is the oldest Indian restaurant in Plymouth but then goes on to explain that it is a Bangladeshi restaurant!! Ach well......who's counting?
Ethnicicity notwithstanding this is however one of the best "Sub-Continent" restaurants that I have come across in my travels to date. Friendly, bright service in a modern, stylish dining room with a mix of open spaces for larger parties and intimate booths for something more romantic and a menu which has all of the "Indian" curry staples such as Byriani, Vindaloo etc., with a good range of seafood and vegetarian options makes for a curry-lovers' ideal.
This is definitely worth a visit after an evening sampling the delights of the Barbican pubs and no worries about finding a taxi afterwards as they seem to have a direct line which works even on the busiest rainy nights - always a plus!!
Favorite Dish: Whilst the menu has everyone's favourites I personally go straight to the "Exclusive Dishes" section of the menu which has the chefs' own dishes, everything cooked to order with fresh herbs and spices and everything equally delish. If having to choose my own recommendation I would suggest the King Prawn Polak Special which is a decent portion of juicy king prawns cooked with mild (ish) spices, spinach and home-made paneer (a sort of curd cheese), with a portion of pilau rice - memorable even after an all-day session around The Barbican.
This is not the cheapest place in town, my usual bill for puppadoms, main course, beer and coffee coming in over the 20 quid mark, but well worth the money:)
As to beer try the bottled Bangla, imported direct, both flavoursome and cooling, in fact why stop at one???

The outside appearance is nothing but a lie! The exterior is dingy, plain and uninviting. It isn't helped by the fact that this place is only accessible by a narrow entrance down a set of wet treacherous steps.
However, when you get inside, everything is forgotten. This establishment is decorated elegantly in the best traditional Chinese manner, with the music helping to set the tone. You cannot but help feeling as though you are in a little bit of imported China. The best bit by far and away however, is the view of the sea out through the immense windows.
The food is absolutely delicious, and in traditional English Chinese (?) restaurant fashion they offer you the opportunity to take the experience as far as you wish. All of the English trappings are available, so those not agile enough with the chopsticks can opt for the knife and fork without standing out. The same rule can be applied to the entire establishment, allowing you to choose a more traditional beverage as well.
I would seriously recommend booking in advance unless you intend to eat early, as you will be unlikely to get a table otherwise.
Favorite Dish: No idea where to begin.
Always partial to their Special Chow Mein, but the best option is to go with a group and pick between the lot of you, putting the dishes in the middle.
Another good deal that I have tried recently with a friend of mine is one of the set meals. We were so stuffed that we had to cancel the plans for the rest of the evening...

I was recommended by my guest house to have a cream tea at this tea room and I was not disapppointed! It was nice spending time in this traditional tea room and housed in the Barbican, one of the oldest listed premises dating from 1640.
You can sit the gardens at the back which overlook the Elizabethan Gardens.
I, however, had to wait a bit before I was served but once I was my cream tea came promptly! I highly recommend having a cream tea or a meal at this tea room and I look forward to returning there on a future visit.
Favorite Dish: I ordered the traditional cream tea which consist of scones alongside tea. The scones were just freshly made (were still warm) and I had the scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream. I never tasted scones so delicious!

A Plymothian institution, Cap'n Jaspers is a glorified burger stall on the dockside in the Barbican district. Now, they don't just serve burgers, but instead foot long hot dogs, burgers with half a tonne of various meat substances in "Jasperizers" - massive burgers with 1lb of beef, bacon, cheese, tomato, onion and tonnes else you can't beat it, especially for the cheap price.
Alongside the grease-fest you can get a mug of tea for 40pence, and for a 20p deposit you can have it in a mug filled to the brim, now where can you beat that!
Not for the health conscious mind!
Favorite Dish: Jasperizers - Meat, beef, bacon, cheese, tomatoes, onion, cheese, ketchup, mustard, relish, etc. etc. etc...........

The restaurant is situated in the center of the city. I ate there a couple of times and everything looked fresh and nice. Food was tasty and more than planty. I have to mention that it was quite cheap. Very good value for money!
Favorite Dish: Chicken Kebab with chips!

Located in the middle of the City Centre this is an easy Restaurant to get to. Overlook the decor. The Greco-Roman theme has nothing to do with the cuisine it serves, which is always top notch.
I have always got the impression that they are never too busy to not let you in, even when they are packed out the doors, and, even more impressively, they seem to find the extra space.
The Steak & Omelette Bar lives up to its name. It has prodigious amounts of Steaks and Omelettes on its Menu. Be sure to not overlook the specials however, as some of these are very good. One of the classic parts of this place is that it allows you to select your steak from the bar and then choose how you would like it cooked, almost like going to the supermarket and selecting a steak there. Fantastic.
Favorite Dish: C'mon... Steak... Everybody has their own particular way of how they prefer their steak, and this place lets you have it, every time & BIG!!!

Many people knock Plymouth's Pannier Market for being drab and boring. But that kinda misses the point. The market provides everyday basics at very reasonable prices, along with freebie banter and excelllent service.
Whilst it's not somewhere where you'd expect to find culinary excellence it does have some very good, simple, eating places for both sit down and take away.
Thai Delight does both. This is a tiny corner stall, pretty much in the middle of the market hall, offering a short menu of wok and deep-fried Thai dishes cooked to order by their friendly cook. Green tea, canned and bottled beverages are available but no beer :-( Plus they stock a small range of authentic Oriental ingredients for sale at much better prices than you'll find in the local supermarkets.
Favorite Dish: Pad Thai with chicken worked for me on my last visit. Plenty of meat, ribbon noodles with just the right amount of bite, piquantly spiced, not too sweet and a good garlicky aftertaste.
Not particularly cheap at £5 per portion but substantial enough for a light and tasty lunch.
