Your Local Grocery Store!: Get Your Devon Custard Here!

by johngayton

This pic arrived yesterday from my most special friend, all the way from Hull in Canada. So it seems that our Devon custard is a bit of a traveller too - not really surprising when you think that here in Devon we produce the best milk in the country - in fact if you look at our local phone book's "Business Pages" you will find that there are more listings for "Dairy Farmers" than for any other category (except pubs!).Well I've no idea at all what this shop looks like, nor do I know its EXACT location but it seems well worth the 3,500 mile trip to find out ;-p

I Hope It's Travelled Well!
BURTS: The World's Crispiest, Tastiest, Potato Chips!

by johngayton

This isn't actually a shop but rather a factory - but no ordinary factory: this is the home of Burts Hand Fried Potato Chips. Devon is well known for its small artisanal food producers and Burts is defintely one of these. The company makes the best potato chips I've ever eaten and has elevated the making of their crisps into an art form. Every stage of the manufacture, from the farmers who grow the potatoes to the packing, is a labour of love and each hand-made batch bears the name of the person who fried it and even the field from which the potatoes came. The chips come in a variety of flavours, ranging from the normal salted (except that these are sea salted) to some more exotic tastes such as Bloody Mary and Firecracker Lobster. All the flavourings used are natural and for instance the Firecracker Lobster actually does have real lobster and for extra exoticism uses Tientsin Chilli from...

Devon Beef - Even Better Than Scotch!

by johngayton

As a born and bred Scotsman, and a professional cook to boot, I always used to swear by the beef of my home country and no matter where I found myself working in the UK I would always source a butcher who could supply me with decent Scottish beef. Not any old Scottish beef of course, but that reared and finished naturally without being overdosed by antibiotics nor plumped by growth hormones to maximise the yield. One always has to be careful about just trusting the simple appellation "Scotch Beef" as cattle of varying heritage are often shipped to Scotland just to be finished (and not necessarily naturally) and slaughtered in order to command a premium price. These things happen! Here in Devon tho' there is an immense local pride in the artisanal nature of farming, a pride taken in ensuring that whatever produced is worthy of the "Devon" name. Yes, there are commercial considerations...

Devon Cheeses - Sorry France, Neuf Points!

by johngayton

I've always enjoyed a good cheese and what defines a good cheese is flavour, that special unami, the undefinable essence of savouriness that bites back at the palate, wrestling it into submission. Different cheeses, of course, have entirely different flavours with, say, a well-matured Stilton attacking the back palate in a full-frontal offense, whilst a subtle Brie will caress the tongue and leave it lolling, unable to resist its temptations.I am, and always have been, a great fan of French cheeses and as I type this my palate brings to mind the cheeses from a perfect lunch at Roscoff overlooking the harbour in the spring sunshine with the working boats for company (and the rather attractive blond at the next table - with her husband ;( ) and the coffee and vieux Calvados to finish. I love the texture of a chalky, walnuty, Vignotte as it melts in my mouth, and equally so the bite of a...

Quicke's Farm: Handmade cheese and ice cream

by antiquated_tory

This farm is owned by a family who have been making cheese for 400 years. You can buy their stuff over Amazon in the US, Canada and Australia as well as in the UK. However, the selection at their farm store is better and includes a case of products made by other small farms in the area, including a number of soft cheeses and even sausages. Also, the farm store sells the ICE CREAM they make there, which is fabulous. The farm store also sells off-cuts of mature cheddar for next to nothing. It is only cling wrapped, not vacumn sealed, so it isn't suitable for long travel, but it's dead tasty stuff.Of their full-priced cheese, in vacumn-packed muslin, I'm partial to the Red Leister and especially the Unpasteurized cheddar. My wife is partial to their Oak Smoked Cheddar.Oh, to make the trip worthwhile, I'd suggest a meal and a few pints at The Beer Engine in Newton St Cyre afterwards. The...
