In addition to the commercial bus service providers Tavistock also has a very active Community Bus Service with both town and country services. Unfortunately I can't find an online link to timetables but these are available locally from libraries, tourist information centres and are posted at the main stops.
The Community Services use Bedford Square as their main pick-up and dropping off point in town.

Tavistock's main bus station is on Plymouth Road, just after the Bedford Hotel. From here the Devon subsidiaries of First Group and Stagecoach operate services around the County and out onto the moor. There are also other local services provided by Beacon Bus.
The main services run to Plymouth to the south and to Barnstaple in the north and there are are a couple of cross-moor local services. For details and timetables follow the links below.

Tavistock is a bit of an odd-bod place to get to by public transport as Dartmoor doesn't have any main roads. There used to be two railway stations here but now are none and so the only way to get to the town, public-transport-wise, is by bus.
From where I live in North Devon I get the #118 Beacon Bus (run by the locally-owned Holsworthy Company) which is a pretty and spectacular journey through the lush rural heartland of Devon, just nipping into the fringes of Dartmoor as it arrives, with great views all the way. Even though this is, for me, about a two and a half hour journey I spend more than half of that time looking out the window taking in the scenery rather than nose down in my book.
From Exeter the bus service requires a couple of changes on rural buses or to take the train to Plymouth and the bus from there. Both these options also offer stunning scenic diversions from your book. The train section between Exeter and Newton Abbot is particularly spectacular as it follows the coastline with the waves lapping onto the tracks below the red sandstone cliffs of the ever-eroding Jurrasic Coast.
Nice journeys and worthwhile destination!
