If you're going to the pub on a Monday lunchtime..

by johngayton

...Make Sure Its Open!!Devon really does have some cracking pubs both in the towns and the villages - plus a few in the middle of nowhere! Virtually all of the country pubs here are privately run (as opposed to being managed houses for the brewery companies) and as such many don't open on a Monday lunchtime in order to give their owners a bit of a break. Running a pub is hard work and does require a 7 day a week commitment but for many country pubs staying closed on a Monday morning allows their patrons to catch up with all the myriad of other jobs that need doing.Mind you I was really miffed with this pub though! I took my bike and camera out down the Great Torrington to Meeth section of The Tarka Trail one Monday and had a very pleasant, mildly strenuous, cycle and was looking forward to a beer before heading back. Arriving at the Bull and Dragon at Meeth I was a bit disappointed that...

Cycle Touring - Security

by travelinxs

Having your bike nicked whilst on a biking trip is going to be a little inconvenient to say the least. A decent lock is obvious, though the better the lock the heavier it is. I have an 'Onguard' combination lock which I hope will sufice. Im trying to develop a way of securing the bike to the tent at night and will let you know how I get on. I also carry a whistle as wont be cycling alone which may come in useful when trying to get the others attension further down the road. Infact Ive always carried a whistle.. just in case. As for the cyclists best friend, the dog, Im working on that one too!

The Devon Mile! Cont...

...Just as you are double checking that you have the map the right way up and that you still are in the Northern Hemisphere you pass an open field gate and there's a local farmer, stretching his legs as he dismounts his tractor cab."Good afternoon?" You inquire, attempting not to look as lost as you actually are, "The pub at Chittlehamholt? Is it just up here?" Making the pretence that you know exactly where it is and that you're just looking for confirmation."Aye lad." He confirms, whilst deftly rolling the thinnest of cigarettes with his bear-sized oil-stained hands, "Aye just over the crest and up the next hill, maybe about a mile she be. Could do with a beer meself, but work to do." The cigarette duly lit, puffed upon and used as a pointer to indicate the direction. "Have one for me." as he turns back to his tractor and its Heath-Robinson attachment."Will do." You reply, telling...

The Devon Mile!

by johngayton

One thing Devon is great for is getting off the beaten path, being the 3rd largest County in England yet one of the least populated. Here we have our twin moors, Dartmoor and Exmoor, each unique and both equally stunning in their respective beauties with Dartmoor's granite based ruggedness contrasting Exmoor's haughty lushness. We have our twin coastlines with their myriad bays, harbours and beaches, punctuated both north and south by the many rivers flowing into the respective Bristol and English Channels sweeping valleys through the coastal cliffs as they descend from their moorland birthplaces. In the centre of all this lies the rural heartland, sometimes forested, othertimes undulating farmland supporting both crops and livestock. The county has very few major roads but a lot of minor ones criss-crossing crow's-feet wise the landscape as they radiate from the towns and villages. Where...

Narrow Lanes

by stevezero

Once you get off the main roads, the lanes can become very narrow, Also they are usually bordered by high hedges, so you cannot seee what is round the corner. If you meet a car coming from the other direction, one of you may have to reverse a way.So what may seem a short cut on the map ends up taking you longer.

Steep Hills & Twisting Roads

by Bwana_Brown

The A39 highway in North Devon, as it winds its way through the western parts of Exmoor National Park, faces some major challenges as it descends from the 800 foot high cliffs down to sea level where rivers have gouged major valleys and then, just as quickly, has to climb back up out of those river valleys. Especially near Lynmouth, where the road actually follows the walls along the Lyn River valley, there were a number of steep grades (25%) and hairpin turns (I once had to shift down into 1st gear on a particularly sharp uphill turn). This is compounded by a daunting drop to the river on one side, high banks on the other side blocking vision of on-coming traffic, west-setting sun shining directly into the driver's eyes, narrow lanes with no shoulders and a 50-mph speed limit! Still, it wasn't too bad after all the practise I had managed to have up to that point in the trip! The photo...

TRAFFIC JAMS!!!

by cazz38

All over in Devon in the holiday season you will come across traffic jams, everything seems to come to a halt, everybody must leave home at the same time, LOL.It does get moving in the end and it hasn't put me off and its a good time to take in some of the countryside.

Watch out for the wildlife

by DellyM

This is the heart of the countryside, so when driving it pays to watch out for sheep etc. who stray onto the roads. I had a sheep with its lamb wander out straight in front of the car, luckily I was able to avoid hitting them.
