Sophia's Tapas Bistro: Tapas Just Like in Spain

    by King_Golo Written Aug 6, 2012

Sophia's is THE place to eat in Woolacombe. Elsewhere you get the usual pub grub, here you get the best tapas north of Spain. We have been here twice and both times the food was amazing, the servings generous, the staff friendly and attentive and the service fast. Because the place is so popular, you may have to wait a bit to get a table, but Sophia's also takes reservations.

Favorite Dish: Tapas Special No 3 for two - consisting of houmous, greek salad, mushrooms in garlic and cream sauce, Italian salamis, stuffed vine leaves, pickled peppers and some slices of bread.

Captain Jack's: Talking About "Tasty Morsels"!

Devon certainly has some great pubs and Captain Jack's here in Woolacombe has just joined my personal top 20!

This is a really characterful pub, both externally and internally, built on the site of a 12th century farmhouse, remains of which can be seen (if you know they are there) in the courtyard . The modern incarnation as a "Smugglers Retreat" manages to buck the often tacky pub-design themeing with the assorted nautical knick-knacks having been carefully sourced giving the pub an almost authentic feel.

This is a nice pub with friendly, helpful, staff. A couple of local ales on offer and in perfect nick ;) The food menu has all the staples and a few interestingly individual dishes too (and at reasonable prices!). Whilst it doesn't have the best views in the town it does have a very pleasant courtyard and garden with more of the nautical knick-knacks and even a few palm trees!

Favorite Dish: For those that know me it'll come as no surprise to find that as soon as I spotted them on the "Specials" board I just had to opt for the Smoked Haddock Fishcakes.

These weren't the best I've eaten but not the worst. Their main flaw being that they lacked any proper fishy texture, as if they had been made either in the mixing machine or by someone very heavy-handed in the stirring department. They were at least home-made tho', tasty enough and accompanied by a nice healthy well-dressed salad and a sour cream dip.

    All-in-all defintely worth a visit!
