In summer catch the open-top buses around Poole and Bournemouth for as much fresh air as you can gulp and great views. My favourite ride is from Bournemouth to the seaside resort of Swanage, crossing the mouth of Poole harbour on the chain ferry.

The ferry between Studland and Poole

We went to the ferry, to take us across to Studland.

It is a brief, 7 minute ferry journey, and it was a pity the weather wasnt playing along, as I am sure we missed out on a lot of lovely scenery.

We waited about 15 minutes for the ferry to arrive at our side, and all the cars drove on. It took many cars! It was about £3 per car, you pay double if you have a trailer!

*please note: This tip appears on my Studland page too. Please do not rate it if you have rated this one. Thanks!

Arriving In Poole By Bus

Poole Bus Station

Poole's main bus station is situated in the town centre, craftily located next to the Dolphin Shopping Centre through which you have to pass in order to get into the town centre proper.

There are two main bus operators serving the city, the yellow Transdev company and Wilts and Dorset. Because these compete against each other services are regular and fares are low and both companies offer value for money day tickets. See websites below for fares, routes and timetables.

Poole Railway Station

Poole Railway Station is located at the back of the bus station in the town centre. Poole is on the main South West Trains line between London Waterloo and Weymouth and trains run roughly every half hour with a journey time from Waterloo of just over 2 hours.

Website below has all the info.

The #1 Bus Arriving At Railway Station
1 more image

Whilst Poole's town centre is relatively compact and easily walkable there's also a useful circular bus service which runs every 15 minutes during the day. The service starts and finishes at stand H at the main bus station and loops around via the railway station, the town centre and the quay with a journey time of about 25 minutes. Maximum single fare is 50 pence.

See website for route and timetable.

This is more a "FROM" tip really but I suppose it is "TO" when coming back!

Poole Ferry Terminal is located about 20 minutes walk from the town centre, across the harbour bridge. From here there are daily Brittany Ferries to Cherbourg, with a summer crossing time of just over two hours, and summer services run by Condor Ferries to St Malo, Jersey and Guernsey.

From here you can take day-trips to the Channel Islands or short breaks to France and the ferry terminal provides ample car-parking and has left luggage facilities for foot passengers.

The respective websites have details of sailings and online booking:
