There are several places in Lulworth Cove where you can buy locally-made ice cream. We chose the Dolls' House because there was a table with seats available in the sun in its small but pretty garden, and because we couldn’t resist the appeal of its resident cat (see photo 2 if you too are a cat lover)! But the ice cream turned out to be just as appealing. I chose English Toffee and Chris had Strawberry Cheesecake, each in a sugar cone. The helpings were described as single scoop (costing £1.60 each) but were very generous, and the server took particular care with mine as the ice cream was quite solid and she wanted to be sure to give me my due portion.
Both flavours were delicious and we enjoyed relaxing for a short time in the garden while taking a break from exploring the village and coastline.
We had a very pleasant lunch in the garden of this pub. Both the garden and the pub itself are large, with plenty of room for the many visitors who flock here. There was a good selection of local beers on offer, including an organic one made with nettles which I would have tried had we not been driving.
Chris chose a tuna mayonnaise sandwich, which was generously filled and quite tasty (cost £3.75). I had the crab hot-pot, a delicious combination of locally caught crabmeat, new potatoes, onion and cheese baked in a small dish and served with a salad garnish; this cost £6.50, which I thought was reasonable for the size of the portion and tastiness.
We enjoyed our meal, and sitting out in the sunny garden, but the service could have been quicker. Although the pub was busy, there seemed to be plenty of staff and the meals we’d ordered were not complicated, so to wait over 30 minutes seemed a little long to us.
The pub also has rooms and offers bed and breakfast, should you be looking for accommodation in Lulworth. The balconies of some overlook the garden and are real sun-traps, though would lack privacy and be quite noisy during pub opening hours I think.
Sit down for a cup of tea at the beach café and enjoy the views across the cove and study people walking on the beach itself below you...
