Notes from a small island by Bill Bryson tells the story of Bryson's last trip around Britain before moving back to the States after almost 20 years on the British island.
The book is packed with interesting and funny stories about travelling as it really happens. By reading the book you get a nice insight into the life of the British people and their peculiarities. Some places Bryson visits on his trip are: Bradford, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Llandudno, London, Porthmanog and Thurso.
This book is definitely a must-read for everyone before or after a trip to Britain.

    Bring clothes for all weather!

Bring a warm jumper to Brighton. Although we seem to get warmer weather than the rest of the UK, it is totally and unpredictably changeable. You can go into a shop from brilliant sunshine and come out 20 mins later into a thick sea mist!

Also bring sunglasses, suncream in the summer and a mac and umbrella 'ella ella ella' ; ) - as I said, it is changeable! Hats of all descriptions are very polular here.

Antibiotics are perscription only here, unlike most of Europe. You can buy most other everyday medicines in Boots the chemist. (Large one in center of town).

Easily bought all over the place here. (Boots again).
Superdrug is cheap for similar things.

Comfortable shoes for walking, especially on the pebbles.

Take a free city guide of Brigton at the tourist information. It is a pocket guide with every kind of useful information about the city (e.g. shopping, eating out, pubs, clubs etc.).
Aprat from that it includes a detailed map of Brighton and the surrounding area.
Brighton's tourist information office is located at Bartholomew Sqaure near the coach station and the Palace Pier.

    Rough Guide to Britain

To explore Great Britain an up to date guidebook is very useful. I often use the Rough Guide to Britain (England, Wales, Scotland).
It covers information for all budgets on the best places to stay, eat and drink. Numerous recommendations and practical tips on exploring the countries make this book an useful travel companion.

  • Bring something warm to throw on for the pier. No matter how warm it is, it's always cooler (and windier) out there.

  • Actually there's not much point in bringing an umbrella -it does rain a lot, but the rain usually comes with wind, so a woolly hat is better. Or a hood.

You can get practically everything you need at the major chemists like Boots and Superdrug or small neighbourhood ones.

Don't bring a bucket and spade -the beach is made of stones. Regretably.

  • Definately an umbrella, after all it's England!! It always pours unexpectedly!

Lots of shops around, so don't worry about stocking up on equipment.

If you're going in summer, and if you're going to be swimming, then obviously some sunblock! But make sure to take a towel or rent a sunbed as the beach is pebbly and can be quite painful!

  • Depends on how you are travelling, but suitcases or rucksacks are fine, but we dont have a lot of porters anymore and you will be expected to carry your own stuff. Airports have luggage carriers though :-)

Brighton can vary in temprature but in Summer tops and shorts are fine in winter good warm clothing. BUT!! no matter what time of year, keep you eye on the weather forcasts and get an Umbrella, :-) it can appear even on a nice sunny day. Just use good common sense and you cant go far wrong.

You can buy everything you need in Brighton, but make sure you have enough prescriprion drugs with you to last, if you do not belong to the EU as Medical costs are high and a lot of meds cant be bought over the counter, if you are not sure go to

    http://www.wellbeing.com/atp/index.jsp

they have a lot of info there.

Brighton can deal with any of your Photographic needs it may be a little more expensive than the US and Canada though.

Camping is a big popular holiday in the UK with stores in every town and city, great campgrounds all over. go to

    http://camping.uk-directory.com/

you will find what you need there.

This is the UK, so an umbrella is something you should always pack. Good, comfy walking shoes are a must, you'll be walking a lot here. We walked for miles and miles exploring all the castles and towns.

And it's by the water, so pack a warm sweater or cardigan for when the sun goes down.

Sunscreen for those unexpected hot sunny days.

Lots of film to get that perfect shot of the castles.

A beach chair for that pebbly beach.

  • If you are back packing then it is fine to bring a ruck sack. If you are on business then a suitcase is probably more applicable.

Bring Warm clothes, umbrellas and hats and scarves especially in the winter as it gets windy. If you are coming from somewhere with a hot climate you will really feel the cold, I warn you!!

It is easy to get hold of photographic equipment, Boots and Jessops which are on Weston Road are the best places for film etc
