Hastings Lifeboat Station and Visitor Centre

by toonsarah

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution plays an important role in this country, surrounded as we are by the sea. It provides an essential service but unlike the other emergency services (police, fire, ambulance) is a charity, relying on donations from the public. Some of those donations are raised by having open days, when it’s possible to tour the lifeboat station and learn more about the work of the lifeboat men and about the boats themselves. On our recent visit to Hastings it was one such day, and a volunteer showed us around and told us lots (arguably too much!) about the two different boats they have here. One is a smaller Zodiac-style inshore boat, the Daphne May, while the other, the Sealink Endeavour (seen in my photo) can travel as much as 50 miles out to see on rescue missions. Apparently one or the other of the boats goes out from here an average of 50 times a year, so you...

Not for the Squeamish or Faint Hearted or those...

by Mariajoy

... with a heart condition!! This is the sort of thing we used to read about in the tabloids. The eating habits of those living in the North of England were a fascination to us in the south - particularly the Deep Fried Mars Bar - we thought it was just an urban legend - until I saw, in my local chippy, a pile of Mars Bars in the fridge behind the counter. I said to my American friend who was with me at the time, "I bet they are meant for the fryer" and he replied in disbelief "Nooo... they can't be?" So I said I would ask the guy... "Can I have a deep fried Mars Bar"?? And he never even looked up from his fish fryer.. just took one out, unwrapped it - dunked it in batter and said "it won't be a minute"... well.. my friend was aghast... could this really be happening this far south? Yes it can.. and it did. The 3,000 calorie DFMB has made its way to sleepy Sussex - (and we don't even...

Boiled Egg and Marmite Soldiers

by Mariajoy

Despite budget air travel, the internet, and a plethora of travel guides, so many little common place, everyday, traditional things are still unknown to people living only a few hundred miles away. So when I was asked "What are boiled eggs and Marmite Soldiers?" by a well travelled VT member, I thought a simple step by step guide (with pictures) might help explain this lovely British breakfast! :))Please see my travelogue for full details on how to prepare it! :)

Martello Tower No 55

by Mariajoy

Martello towers were built all along the Sussex & Kent coast line during the Napoleonic wars (1800s) to defend the country from French invaders. Over the years, many of them have been demolished or have fallen into the sea, but luckily, several have survived. Some are derelict like this one in the photo, but others have been converted into unusual (and expensive!) seaside homes.

Sussex Straddling Stones

by Mariajoy

In Ye Olde Bygone Days of Yore, when Sussex was populated with be-smocked, hay sucking, pitchfork wielding farmers standing by the gate, these strange mushroom shaped stones were used to keep hay stacks off the ground. There would be four stones per haystack, one in each corner. These days Sussex is populated with its fair share of Chavs and replica stones can be bought at garden centres.Oooh arrrgh.
