various: Fish fresh from the sea

by toonsarah

Hastings is home to one of the largest fishing fleets on England’s south coast, and the largest beach-launched one, so it’s hardly surprising that this is a great place to buy fresh fish. Head down to the Stade (the shingle beach area of the Old Town where the fishing fleet is based) and wander around the different stalls to examine the catch of the day and choose something delicious for dinner. The little stalls are dotted between the tall distinctive net-drying huts so emblematic of this part of town, and are run by the fishermen and their families themselves. Each stall will only be open while there is fish to sell, so if one appears closed carry on walking till you find another that still has some left. What you can buy will depend on today’s catch. On a recent visit we saw sole, plaice, prawns and much more. If you don’t want to carry your purchase around for the rest of the day at...

various: Good shops in Hastings

by toonsarah

As well as a reasonable number of high street chains, Hastings has a good selection of interesting independent shops, many of them quite quirky. The Old Town is the best place to go if this is the sort of shopping you enjoy. On our latest visit we particularly liked:Femme en Rouge - a wonderful range of fashion jewellery at really reasonable prices at 16 Marine Parade. I bought a really pretty necklace for a friend for just £15.Gallery 53 - as the name suggests, a small art gallery at no. 53 High Street, in the Old Town. The owner sells prints and originals of his wife's watercolours, and they also run a bed & breakfast upstairs. We were lured in by George the cat (seen here being made a fuss of by Chris) and fell for a small print of colourful poppies and irises which will look great in our bedroom, and which only cost £20.Penbuckles Ltd. - another great find in the Old Town (no. 50...

Farm shops: Redcoats Orchard

by Mariajoy

The country lanes that meander throughout East Sussex are dotted with farm shops selling fresh local produce - anything from honey and free range eggs to Cider and cakes. You might expect to pay a little more than in the supermarkets but these are local people trying to make a living and the produce is usually fresh. (Check carefully though!) . Summer is great for the strawberries and other soft fruits! Mmmmm :)) This particular farm shop also has a few local handicrafts for sale - many of them do! They often have a few farm animals around - this one had pigs and a peacock! 90p for half a dozen free range eggs, 40p for a kilo of potatoes. This will of course vary from season to season - depending on what is available.

various: Shopping in Battle

by toonsarah

The High Street in Battle is a great antidote to all the uniform, standardised high streets that dominate so many English towns these days. Most of the shops are one-offs and are a mix of tourist-focused ones and those aimed at locals. So you will find a number of great art galleries interspersed with butchers’ and other food shops selling local produce; gift shops alongside the sort of traditional ladies fashion shops that have long since disappeared from most of our high streets; plus: ~ a great kitchen and cookware shop with every cooks gadget you could ever imagine wanting, and several you won’t have imagined~ jewellery shops with modern silver and more traditionally styled pieces~ an excellent delicatessen whose window display always makes my mouth water! And much more besides. I also enjoy looking in the windows of the several estate agents to fantasise about the country home I...

Stan Rosenthal Studio Gallery: As so often, we bought a picture!

by toonsarah

Regular readers of my pages will know that we like to buy pictures as souvenirs of our travels, so perhaps it isn’t surprising that when we visited this gallery with our friends recently we found quite a few that tempted us and ended up purchasing one of them. The gallery is owned and run by the artist and his wife, both of whom were there to welcome us on our visit (along with their small daughter!) It was great to meet and talk with the creator of all the prints adorning the walls, and this gave us a strong sense of his passion for his art and an understanding of his methods (he uses various print-making techniques). Stan’s prints depict many local scenes, e.g. around Battle itself, Hastings etc. There are a lot too from Wales, and some other parts of Britain. Most show rural or coastal scenes. The colours are vivid and may not be to everyone’s taste, but we really liked many of them....
