various: Fish fresh from the sea
Hastings is home to one of the largest fishing fleets on England’s south coast, and the largest beach-launched one, so it’s hardly surprising that this is a great place to buy fresh fish. Head down to the Stade (the shingle beach area of the Old Town where the fishing fleet is based) and wander around the different stalls to examine the catch of the day and choose something delicious for dinner. The little stalls are dotted between the tall distinctive net-drying huts so emblematic of this part of town, and are run by the fishermen and their families themselves. Each stall will only be open while there is fish to sell, so if one appears closed carry on walking till you find another that still has some left. What you can buy will depend on today’s catch.
