    City of roundabouts...

by arturowan Written Dec 12, 2013

Colchester has been planned by a council who have a compulsive-obsessive drive to put roundabouts in every conceivable junction...
There is no way into or out of the town, without having to negotiate a ridiculous quantity of them, in fact, at the 5 road junction at the top of Clingoe Hill, there are 5 concentric mini-roundabouts!
Approach from other directions, & every former T-junction is now a mini-roundabout...
Use the dual-carriageway bypass, & it's 1 rounabout after another, most of them 3 lanes wide...
Colchester uses a lot of public money to promote itself as a cyclist-friendly town, but how can anybody safely cycle in a place of endless roundabouts?
If you try to turn right on any of the bypasses, you have to cross 2 lanes of traffic behind you, doing 60mph+ then turn through 3 lanes of roundabout - by which time, even if the manouevre began on an empty highway, in the time it takes to pedal over so much tarmac, there is a vehicle on top of you before it's possible to complete such a turn...
Colchester's obsession with roundabouts was supposed to create a traffic filter system without the need for lights, yet no sooner was the giant roundabout at Clingoe Hill converted into 5 mini-roundabouts in series, without traffic lights, it became gridlock...
Traffic lights were returned to the site, but in greater quantity, because now there are 5 roundabouts where once there was 1
Colchester traffic planning is a case of constant interference & never learning from past mistakes, & if you hate roundabouts, the town is a living nightmare...

    Colchester City?

by arturowan Written Dec 12, 2013

Colchester is a repeat applicant to have its town status uprated to that of a city - it's 1 of the fastest growing urban sprawls in the country, & is already bigger than some official UK cities...
But what does this mean for the town's surrounding area?
I can still recall when places such as Rowhedge, Stanway, & the Hythe, were separate places, each with their own identity...
Rowhedge was once a village with a quay, not unlike Wivenhoe or Mistley, but now it has disappeared into the urban expansion of greater Colchester, & the commuters who pass through it, do not even recognise it as its own place anymore...
Stanway is now inseparable from Colchester, yet once had enough of its own identity, that the zoo there was named Stanway Zoo, (not Colchester Zoo, as it is today, with unprepared visitors bypassing Stanway & driving into central town, in order to find it...)
Now, plans are agreed to continue this urban sprawl north eastwards, so that the edge of Colchester will meet the village of Great Horkesley...
So, what will this mean for the people of Great Horkesley, but that their village goes the same way as Rowhedge, & is absorbed into the greater whole of so-called 'Colchester'...
The growth of Colchester is akin to a tumour - it devours its surroundings & overwhelms them into an amorphous, overgrown mass...
Why does Colchester have to keep growing in its obsession to be recognised as a city?
It's time it stopped, & all the ridiculous building of roundabouts on top of roundabouts, & bypasses into & out of the surrounding sprawl was no more...
