    Clarence Yard: Heart of Southend

    Clarence Yard

Clarence Yard is a popular authentic courtyard bar with plenty of atmosphere.

Located in the centre of Southend, close to the railway station, the building was originally a mid-to-late 1800's bakery. Over the last few years, the building has been restored and renovated (retaining the original stone courtyard) to include two freehouse bars serving a fine selection of wines and beers; and an open kitchen serving contemporary meals from lunchtime through to the evening.

During the evenings, the main bar sees some of the area's premier DJs playing lively soul and funk sets to an appreciative audience comprised of people from all age groups. The bar also boasts six video screens which are used to show major sporting events.

  • Varied: Pubs and Bars

by justcomebackshattere Written Aug 31, 2009

Loads of pubs in Southend but lots of them were all talk if you know what I mean - deafening music (mostly house) being pumped out onto the streets but largely empty inside and none too welcoming atmospheres. Whetherspoons on the High Street was probably the best imo, and a small bar called the Cornucopia was packed both nights we were there, so much so that we never went in! Loads of karaoke bars if you like to sing along, but again, deafening and pumped out onto the streets. Hard pushed to find a decent old fashioned pub where you could relax and enjoy a pint. The Royal Hotel was ok, but insisted on shutting the upstairs bar at 11, despite having paying customers in (us) and moving us all to a basement 'disco' where yet more house was being blasted, about two customers were standing around looking bored and no bar in sight. Went for a take away instead! Southend desperately needs a REAL pub!
