The local girls...

by Gili_S

There are lots of history and stories about the Essex girls, I am not sure how much I can actually show and tell here, but I guess you can more or less believe the stories that you want and the rest you can use your imagination... ;-)

Don't worry but this is true...

by sourbugger

Ongar railway station is one heck of a long way from central London. Despite heading deep into Essex it was a stop on the London Underground system until the 1990's. The central line now finishes at Epping (in Essex). The Epping-Ongar section is now a preserved line that intends to run steam trains from 2009. It should make a great tourist attraction. This tip is about the area around Ongar station. Rather preprosterously it is home to a colony of 'European black' scorpions. Yes, you heard right, scorpions. No one knows how they got there, although many believe it was a last ditch effort to gain publicity to stop the closure of the underground line - it failed. On the plus side, they are totally harmless and the size of a medium-sized coin But I still wouldn't take one hope as a pet.

The Monsters of Canvey Island...

by sourbugger

Be careful about what you might find washed up on the shoreline...this one should have made the X-files !Back in 1954, a rather mysterious and ugly reddish-brown creature in a decomposed state was washed up on Canvey Island. It was said to be some form of marine life, with protruding eyes standing about two and a half feet tall. I say standing, because it had two legs, each with five toes arranged in a concave U-shape. The zoologists who studied it, not wishing to cause a panic are said to have cremated the poor thing. The next year a local vicar found a similar thing, this time about four foot tall (bloody hell, they're growing !). The whereabouts of this creature after it was handed over to 'experts' has never been brought to light. What are we to make of it all ?
