How the British Pub works

by MikeBird

The traditional pubs are those where you have to go the bar, stand looking like you're waited to be served and then place your order. Once all of your drinks have been poured you pay the bill and then take your drinks to your seat at a table or some other standing place. If the bar is crowded it's not a good idea to stand and drink at the bar because all of the customers will be trying to get served and you will be in the way. Also you can ask for a tray to carry your drinks to your table. We do not usually tip the barman/woman.There are also sometimes two sides to the Pub - the Lounge Bar tends to be plusher, nicer surroundings and less likely to have TVs, and other background noise. The drinks are slightly more expensive in this side of the Pub.The Public Bar is more 'spit and sawdust' - though they don't do that anymore. Usually the furniture is more basic, often with wooden...

Sightseeing: St. Paul's Cathedral

by azadeh1

St. Paul's Cathedral is very nice. A Cathedral dedicated to St Paul has overlooked the City of London since 604AD, a constant reminder to this great commercial centre of the importance of the spiritual side of life. The current Cathedral – the fourth to occupy this site – was designed by the court architect Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1710 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Its architectural and artistic importance reflect the determination of the five monarchs who oversaw its building that London’s leading church should be as beautiful and imposing as their private palaces. Over the centuries, St Paul’s has changed to reflect shifting tastes and attitudes. Decoration has been added and removed, services have been updated, different areas have been put to new uses. Today, the history of the nation is written in the carved stone of its...

Sightseeing: Big Ben

by azadeh1

Big Ben is one of London's best-known landmarks, and looks most spectacular at night when the clock faces are illuminated. You even know when parliament is in session, because a light shines above the clock face. The four dials of the clock are 23 feet square, the minute hand is 14 feet long and the figures are 2 feet high. Minutely regulated with a stack of coins placed on the huge pendulum, Big Ben is an excellent timekeeper, which has rarely stopped. The name Big Ben actually refers not to the clock-tower itself, but to the thirteen ton bell hung within. The bell was named after the first commissioner of works, Sir Benjamin Hall. This bell came originally from the old Palace of Westminster, it was given to the Dean of St. Paul's by William III. Before returning to Westminster to hang in its present home, it was refashioned in Whitechapel in 1858. The BBC first broadcast the chimes on the...

Shop opening times

by toonsarah

Shops in Britain usually open up for the day between 9.00 and 10.00 AM and close between 5.30 and 6.00 PM. The more local the shop, as a general rule, the earlier its opening and closing times are likely to be. In central London, for instance, many shops will not open till 10.00 or even 10.30, and will stay open later to catch people on their way home from work and tourists heading out for the evening. Shops in England are open all day; they don’t close for lunch. On Thursdays, most large shops are open until 8.00 PM, or even later in some of the large shopping malls. Sunday opening is now pretty common. Most large shops open on Sundays. They are allowed to open for 6 hours but opening and closing times vary, though 11.00 AM seems to be a popular opening time. Some supermarkets and small local groceries are open very extended hours, and a few for 24 hours six days a week, with only Sunday...

Went in October, dreary!!!

by kali420

I would go to London again and not do all the sightseeing in 1 day!!!!!!! My girlfriend and I stayed with a bunch of college guys, that she new, in South Hampton. We went to there graduation ball of 3,000 people. We basically lived the college life while we were there. Drank to much, ate too little, lost 8 lbs.!! Went to the Doc Martin store which was 5 stories high!! Still have the shoes I got almost 10 years ago. We only stayed in London for one night and did the entire sightseeing thing in one day. It was literally like the vacation movies with Chevy Chase. Considering we were in South Hampton for 6 days, all we did was walk to pubs and clubs and drink. I don't think I have ever drank that much!

Looking to buy or sell currency?

by St_Vincent

Generally people are wary of high street exchange booths because they can charge high commissions but I have found a company in London offering great exchange rates, whether you are buying or selling Sterling, with zero commission. Rates are considered to be the best in London by financial comparison sites and you can check latest rates on the website below. They have booths on the Strand around the Covent Garden/Charing Cross area and another around Victoria. http://www.thomasexchangeglobal.co.uk/index.phpIf you live in England then I know that the perceived wisdom when travelling overseas is to take a debit card (best one is Nationwide) and use ATM’s but if you do want to get currency here then it should be easier from Summer 2008. The Post Office is trialing special ATM’s in some of their outlets that allow you to obtain Euro or US Dollars free of commission. Of course you would still...

London quick trip

by pattycrabcakes

Take the train. It's the least expensive and quickest route if you don't have a car of your own. Trains are a great way to get around the country. They go to all the major cities. If I only have a day or two in London, I would hop the train to Hampton Court - spend a few hours, get back into the city - buy half-price theater tickets at Leister Square, go to a pub for dinner and drinks (don't eat in restaurants, they charge more) see the show, grab a take away tea and call it a night. I miss the feeling of steping back in time - the houses, the sheep in the fields, the way you can walk into a field to become part of a Constable painting - in the city I expect Charles Dickens to pop round the corner. The haven't erased their past, they live within it.

Say Hurray for fried food

You're trip in Italy is not complete without having pizza and indeed your trip in England is inadequate without indulging in fish and chips. I stopped in Olney at Mario's for some and they were as I expected. The fish was a perfect crispy and was not extremely greasy. Surely at some places, the batter grease is overwhelming. At Marios, I also had a pukka pie. I was so curious to try it as I was thinking I had never had it before. However after one bite I realised that it was just the glorified Brit version of pot pie(as we know it in America!).

British Heritage Pass

by sswagner

A visitor to Britain needs to use any and every opportunity to save money as possible. In conjunction with a Britrail Pass, I purchased a British Heritage Pass. It allows admission to a variety of sites all over Great Britain and Northern Ireland. A full list of sites can be found here:http://www.britishheritagepass.com/ They include noteworthy places such as Stonehenge, the Roman Baths, Leeds Castle, Warwick Castle, Dover Castle, St. Pauls Cathedral, Tower Bridge, the Globe Theater tour, Shakespeare Trust sites, and Edinburgh Castle just to name a few. The pass is really beneficial to someone who is exploring beyond one particular city. If you are limiting yourself to London, there are other passes which might be better suited for you. I bought the pass for $54. This will show how much I saved for a 4 day pass considering the sites I visited:Hampton Court Palace--12.30 poundsRoman...
