One of my favourite memories of our holidays in England was when I was about 8 or 9 years old and we stayed at Keswick in the Lake District. I had a lot of fun on the site as it was in the woods and we also climbed Cats Bells which was just across the road form the caravan site.
My home in England is in an area called East Anglia and this would have been a likely landing area if German had ever managed to invade during World War II. Well, we were ready to, as Churchill said, "Defend our Islands, whatever the cost". All round the countryside in East Anglia, you will see pillboxes like these where British soldiers would have fought . Most, if not all, are open access so you should be able to stop the car and go over for a closer look
In all villages around England you will find a duck pond. Most of them are full of hungry ducks waiting for people to feed them with pieces of bread. Within seconds of getting to this one in the village of Haughley, where I grew up, we were surrounded by loads of quacking, hungry ducks.
Just outside of Chipping Norton (near Oxford), is some of the most beautiful countryside on offer. Walking / driving down the country lanes will provide you with all - round vistas to die for. Take your camera! The laid back atmosphere of almost all the older-fashioned villages is something i dont think you'll find anywhere else in the world (outside of the UK at least).
If you get chance to travel around England you will be amazed at the number of different accents you come across, from the 'Estuary English' of the South-east to the 'Geordie' of Tyneside, from the nasal tones of the Black Country to the burr of the West Country. Why are there so many regional variations? Nobody really knows, but I like to think it goes back to the times before the Roman invasion, when England was divided into tribal areas. No doubt each tribal group had its own words, and its own way of saying and doing things. The Romans imposed some of their ideas and language, but after they left (around 400 CE) England reverted to its own ways. Settlement by Angles, Saxons, Vikings and, later, Normans, all added to the creation of the fascinating variety in language and pronunciation you can still hear today.
There are so many of these around England that still exist, it is strange to see the rest of the city growing around them. Seeing all of these houses together is really interesting just as they were at their prime.
This is my favourite city that I have been to so far. It is a bit expensive compared to other places but there is so much to see and do there, I've been a few times but there are still places I want to see or explore more than I've been able to so far. I just spend 4 days there and visited yet more sights for the first time as well as some old favourites! Its one city in which I will never be bored. See my separate London page
