Glastonbury

by kathycollins

Glastonbury Abbey was one of the richest and most powerful of the Abbeys in Tudor England. The Abbot was richer than Henry, which was not a very popular thing with Henry! So Henry, being the King and all, decided to redistribute the wealth...take a bit of the cash, level the place so no upstarts could reclaim it, and draw and quarter the abbot so he wouldn't be able to protest too much...And the site of pilgrammage for centuries became an elegant ghost town, and fitting memorial to that other powerful Warlord King - Arthur. He and his Genievere are reportedly buried at Glastonbury.

Bath

by kathycollins

Natural hot springs are a trancultural phenomenum - in every society where they occur they have long been associated with healing and wellness. The Romans used the town of Bath for R&R for their troups - the Roman legends must have missed their warm weather in cold, damp Britan!Words like BATH and SPA are derived from place names to become words associated with the healing hot natural mineral springs. What visit to the town of Bath would be complete without taking a tour of the ancient Roman Baths? My photo is a bit of a different perspective. I held my camera a few inches from the ground in order to catch the steam rising. When you are at ground level you can easily see the steam from the natural hot springs that are the sourceof the famous Baths. But cameras held at standing height don't capture it.This is an original seat at the entrance to the largest bath.

Silbury Hill

What is this earthen hill??? man-made monument to the dead or artificial height to see greater distances?...Center of worship or center of living? What is is made of, and why is it still standing?????hmmm....

Tip Photo
Stonehenge

by kathycollins

Ancient monument and modern wonder, Stonehenge is a World Heritage Sight. I had read that getting there after closing is good - you can get right up to the stones...Well, we arrived after closing, the fence is a bit too high for THIS 50+ year old non-climber, and besides, the guards were still there!!! But the chainlink fence is wide enough linked for my camera lense to fit in and zoom to a pretty good shot...too bad the closest we got was the fence!

Tip Photo
Avebury

by kathycollins

Avebury is the neglected big-brother of Stonehenge. This emense stone circle is so large you can't view it all at once. I have often been fascinated by stone circles. I feel calm and alert, alive and aware, but in a tranquil state...its hard to explain, but the gist is that I love stone circles, and really enjoyed getting up close and touching these monuments to past civilization.

Hidcote Gardens

by kathycollins

An alternative view

by sourbugger

Local humour can be somewhat crass. But if you want to see an alternative local view then you could do worse than consult the "Knowhere guide".It is similar idea to VT but very much more downmarket. It's primarily aimed at skaters and therefore younger people - but the other sections have lots of offbeat and/or semi offensive information that gives a real insight into the touristy side of life in whatever town you are visiting. At the very least it will give you the places you need to avoid to keep away from truckulent, unwashed grungy kids.(see www.knowhere.co.uk)

What the word 'beer' means

by sourbugger

Monty Python once asked why drinking American beer is like having sex in a canoe ?(see below for the answer)Many visitors get confused about beer in this country. If you ask for a beer then you will get a bitter - served at room temperature. These are rather like the German dark beers. If you want a good pint then ask for a real ale - these are live beers and cask-conditioned. Only a few places have them.If you want the beer that the rest of the world drinks then ask for a 'lager'. It will be a bag a chemicals - but it's your shout !If you want to ask for a 'BUD' then you obviously know nothing about beer and should not be in a pub - stick to your plastic palaces of pap, leave the beer to real men.Answer to the question :Because it's F***ing close to water !
