So much to discover....

by tini58de

When in the UK there is so much to discover: fabulous landscape, incredible culture, pubs, people, weather.............My favourite thing always is to stroll around and have a look at the details, the little things, that are not so spectacular:The photograph for instance shows a door in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, that I found quite funny! For those of you, who would like to see more of my pictures from my theme calendar "Doors of the World", please have a look at the travellogue!

The oldest pub in England

by uberteacher

Go to Nottingham. Visit Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem which is the oldest pub (as is rumored) in England because it was built in the 1100s, 1196 I think. Also see Mortimer's Hole, but be warned that it is kind of claustophobic. Walk around the little town afterward since it is quite lovely all on its own. My best memory is of ordering margaritas at a "Mexican" restaurant in London and paying about $40.00 for the privilege. After that, we went for a fantastic Indian meal, during which my husband bragged to the waiter of being an "English Texan" and therefore able to handle very extra hot vindaloo. In the end, his face turned red, he began to sweat profusely, and was on the "loo" for many hours afterward.

World Heritage Sites

by KennetRose

Don't let anybody kid you that there's nothing to England outside of London. England boasts no fewer than fifteen UNESCO World Heritage Sites, only three of which are in London (The Tower, the Abbey, Hall and St Margarets Church in Westminster, and Maritime Greenwich). The remainder are:* The castle and cathedral of Durham* The cradle of the Industrial Revolution at Ironbridge in Shropshire* Studley Royal Park and the ruins of Fountains Abbey near Ripon, Yorkshire* Avebury, Stonehenge and associated monuments, Wiltshire* The house and grounds of Blenheim Palace at Woodstock, Oxfordshire* The entire city of Bath* Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland* The cathedral, St. Augustine's Abbey and St. Martin's Church in Canterbury* The fossil-rich cliffs and coast of Dorset and East Devon * The industrial relics of Derwent Valley Mills in Derbyshire* The model community of Saltaire near BradfordI...

There is much more to England than London. Wheter you go to the Cotswolds, Cheshire, Oxfordshire or any other region, you'll find beautifull and distinct architecture, food, culture and tons of beautifull areas which all deserve to be discovered. So get a car and start exploring! You will definitely not regret it!:)

Canals

by KennetRose

One thing that gives England, and especially the Midland counties, its special flavour is the extensive network of canals. They were built (mostly) in the heady days of the Industrial Revolution and underpinned that revolution - though their great working days were short and they fell into disuse and disrepair after the coming of the railways from 1830 onwards. In the last thirty years there has been a growth of interest in the recreational use of canals, coupled with a huge renovation programme which is still going on. A week or two chugging slowly along the network in a traditional narrow boat makes a great holiday and is a terrific way to appreciate the country away from the roar of roads. The canals lead you to out-of-the-way pubs, villages and some fascinating offbeat towns. They are also linear nature reserves, and wonderful places to walk or cycle.

See the country on foot

by KennetRose

Walking is generally considered to be England's favourite pastime, and quite honestly it's the only way to see lots of good things about the country, which are inaccesible to cars and bicycles..Walking covers a multitude of activities, from a gentle stroll down the local lane to the rigours of the wild Pennine Way, and challenge walks like the infamous Lyke Wake Walk - 65 km across the gruelling North York Moors, to be completed within 24 hours..I'll be building up a guide to some of the better-known walks. Meanwhile you should invest in some stout boots and some maps - through the Ordnance Survey the UK is probably the most thoroughly mapped country in the world.

Take a tour of London

by bkathryn

When I was in London for about 24 hours in October 1998, I took a city tour. I always find this is a good introduction to a city, a good way to see some of the town and a good way to see what I might want to see more of. I went with The Big Bus Company that had a pick-up spot at Hyde Park, close to where I was staying. Marble Arch, in the photo, is also right near Hyde Park.

Look around the Pennines

by bkathryn

We passed through the North Pennines "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" on our way north to see Hadrian's Wall. It actually struck me as rather an area of outstanding hightly modified beauty, but maybe that's just a reflection of where I'm from. It was very pretty and definitely worth a look!

See the Royal Armouries

by bkathryn

I really enjoyed the day I spent at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, in August 1996. I gather you can also see Royal Armouries stuff at the Tower of London and Fort Nelson. They have a web site (http://www.armouries.org.uk/leeds/). The hours in Leeds are Daily 10:00 to 5:00.

Go to York

by bkathryn

York is an amazing city. There's lots of history to see there, from remains of Romans to remains of Vikings and Normans. When I was there in August 1996, we saw Yorvik, York Minster, medieval stained glass, Clifford's Tower. We also sat in a pub on the banks of the river that flowed through town and had a pint (or two). It was fabulous.
