    Medieval Market Cross

by grayfo Written Jul 1, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A cross has stood here since the 15th century and was erected as a symbolic reminder to the traders of the day to deal honestly and fairly. The cross was restored in 1878 to commemorate Stow's fresh-water supply and is now a popular resting place and meeting point.

The cross sits atop a gabled head representing; The Crucifixion, St Edward, The Wool Trade and The Civil War; all having a major importance to the town. Below the head is a tall
chamfered shaft on a large plinth, 2 steps and wide base. The cross at one time was surmounted by a gas-lamp.

    Grade II Listed (August 1960)

    St. Edward’s Hall

by grayfo Written Jun 16, 2014

The Hall was built in 1878 from unclaimed deposits that had been placed in the Town Saving Bank. A figure of St. Edward stands in a niche over the main entrance. The steeple, called a bell-turret, was constructed to accommodate a bell used to summon the fire brigade. The building is still used today as the local library and village hall for local sports markets, sales and wedding or birthday celebrations accommodating up to 100 visitors.

Stow On The Wold is the highest small town in The Cotswold ! Roughly above 700 feet from the sea level...
Stow On The Wold is the major centre of English Antiques in UK ! Although less people these days looking for antiques but Stow On The Wold is just known for that purpose this side of the UK isle.Read More About Stow-On-The-Wold...This was my last photo...I didn't take that many photos, didn't I ?
Anyway, on the photo, you can see The Market Cross, on the left of the photo...
The Market Cross was erected as a symbolic reminder to the traders of medieval times to deal honestly and fairly. Although restored and repaired several times, a cross has stood here since the 15th century. After the local gasworks opened, there was a gas lantern at the top. The top of the cross was last restored in May 1994 after an alcohol-happy young man climbed up and fell bringing it down with him. The four sides of the lantern head represent "A Rood", "St Edward", "The Wool Trade", and "The Civil War".
Well, maybe this place had so many people, even not easy for us to find a parking space !
I guessed enough of me taking a few photos then, we shall moved to another place...in The Cotswold.Next Destination :
