A cross has stood here since the 15th century and was erected as a symbolic reminder to the traders of the day to deal honestly and fairly. The cross was restored in 1878 to commemorate Stow's fresh-water supply and is now a popular resting place and meeting point. The cross sits atop a gabled head representing; The Crucifixion, St Edward, The Wool...

  • St. Edward’s Hall

The Hall was built in 1878 from unclaimed deposits that had been placed in the Town Saving Bank. A figure of St. Edward stands in a niche over the main entrance. The steeple, called a bell-turret, was constructed to accommodate a bell used to summon the fire brigade. The building is still used today as the local library and village hall for local...

Stow on the Wold Restaurants

  • Great food, great prices

The Unicorn Hotel is a 17th Century building that was originally a coaching inn. We had our food in the bar complete with original flagstones, exposed oak beams and an inglenook fireplace, although there is a restaurant for evening meals. The food was home produced and fresh and very good. We wandered upon this place by accident after deciding the...

  • The number one tearooms in town

We only found The Old Bakery Tearooms by chance, as they are down an alleyway in a small arcade. The service was friendly, the food was well presented and the toilet was clean. We decided to try a ploughman's lunch, which was freshly made up and the roll was hot and crisp. The dressing that went with it was delicious and we both agreed that this...

Favorite thing: Although Iron Age people were the first to settle on the hill there is also evidence of earlier settlements in the area with Stone Age and Bronze Age burial mounds common throughout.

Early settlers were drawn originally to the adjoining village of Maugersbury, but overtime the commercial success of Stow and its location at the junction of six roads including the Roman road “The Fosse Way” has made it an important meeting place of the Cotswolds.

During Saxon times a missionary by the name of Edward lived as a hermit at the well on the south side of the town helping to establish the first name of the town as St. Edward's Stowe or Holy Place. The word “'wold” means hills, so Stow-on-the-Wold simply refers to Holy Place on the Hill.
