Using Group Deals

by bcorbitt

I am an avid users of the various group discount sites in New York City so with an upcoming trip to London decided to try them on a 4 days trip. I signed up for the london Groupon and livingsocial emails about two months before going. I made sure to only pick places in downtown as was not going to schlep out past zone 2 to use a deal. I also made sure they were highly rated by Yelp though that website does not seem as popular in London. I ended up picking three good deals as was there for only 4 full days and did not want more deals than days and had planned to eat at Fifteen for one of them. It did cause some planning as once left they would be wasted as unlikely to come back to London before the total value was wasted. I recommend it but but next time might keep deals to only half the amount of days.

STOPPED & SEARCHED BY THE POLICE

by DAO

What did I do wrong? Well I was unshaven and carrying a suspicious package. Also I walked away from the Police. At least that’s what they said. Actually I was carrying my hot noodles from a takeaway and looking for my train platform and a chair to sit and eat my hot noodles. STOP AND SEARCH is a Police power in the UK short of arrest. It was originally enacted as legislation to fight gun & knife crime. Take the weapons off the streets and less killings. Fair enough. Since 9/11 and the London Tube bombings and the searches have taken on increased importance. Now here is where the previous Labour government here has messed it up completely and made this a mockery and unproductive waste of valuable Police time in the war on terror. Thanks to the touchy feely Labour Party, the Police cannot PROFILE! So they have to stop middle class old white guys like me. They used to stop (a lot) of young...

Pub Grub

by garridogal

Pub Grub ain't all that bad. In fact, I enjoyed the Fish 'n Chips and Bangers 'n Mash quite a bit. They're especially tasty when washed down by a fine English brew. If it's Pubs we're talking about, I'm also glad to report that there is no shortage of these in Greater London. The names of many of them are hilarious too. My favorite being "The Hung, Drawn and Quartered". Cheers!

If you're in London on New Years

by candell

In the winter visiting the cathedrals are really spectular. Try to sit in on some services, really beautiful and memorable. Obviously, one must visit the Tower. And if you are planning ahead write and get tickets for the Ceremony of the Keys. Where they lock up the Tower at night, every night. You can only observe it if you have a ticket. The British Museum is a wonderful museum and one could spend forever in there if they really like being in museums. In the spring and summer the parks are really beautiful, Hyde, St. James etc. I have a lot of great memories of London as I have been there several times. The last time I was there,my husband, Peter and I took our 2 teen age kids with us to England for our Christmas presents to them in 2005. We ended up in London a couple of days before New Years. We saw all the usual sites, sat in on some religious services and toured the museum. Then it...

Credit card 800 numbers

by jcjlkrebs

I can not recommend insurance but I do have a tip for you. We all carry credit cards with us when we travel with the number on the back (both foreign and domestic numbers) but what in the heck do we do if we loose them or have them stolen. An easy way is to upload the 800 numbers on all of your cards to the notebook on yahoo or google. If you loose your card, you can always find an internet connection to get the numbers. Just passing on a tip that I got years ago.

28 Weeks Later

by Elodie_Caroline

'28 weeks later,' is the sequel to, '28 days later.' These are a couple of English horror films, about a scientifically made disease that makes people go crazy and bite and kill one another; if an infected person's blood gets onto you, you get, 'The 'Rage.' You may wonder what it has got to do with, Canary Wharf? Well, seventy-five per cent of the film is made in, Canary Wharf and is the only reason my hubby bought me the DVD.

Heathrow - Sad goodbyes

by Elodie_Caroline

I can't class this as a favourite thing or memory really; it's a very unhappy memory for me.My brother Paul, who is just 11 months younger than me, decided that him and his family were going to emigrate to Australia. I love my brother Paul, I really like his wife Corrie, and I love my two nephews Darren and Gary. But the day finally came. 21st April 1997, when we had to say goodbye to my kith and kin. I was quite brave at the time, until the lift door closed, to take them off to their plane, then I shed a few etars as little Gary blew us a kiss goodbye.I told myself for weeks and weeks afterwards that they had gone off to a better life, which they most certainly have. But after 6 weeks of being good and brave, I heard, Louis Armstrongs 'All the time in the world' on the radio. I just broke down and cried for hours and hours. This song had been to an advert for 'Guinness' that little Gary...

Hayes - Tattoos!

by Elodie_Caroline

I went to Hayes with my friend Joanne and had my very first Tattoo, back in 1988. Me and Jo had left work at 3.30 on a Friday afternoon, and then travelled up to Hayes in her old Triumph Toledo. Jo was looking for a new Tattoo to go with her other two, that her parents hadn't yet seen, even though she lived with them. The Tattoo shop 'Zeeks' was a little affair down the Gower Road, run by an old guy called Jack Zeek. I started scanning the walls in the Tattooists, as I had been wanting Tattoos ever since I was about 15 years old, I was now coming up to 28! Anyway, I found this tiny picture of a cherry with a 6 and a 9 by the sides of it 'Cherry 69' I just had to have it! I was so used to people telling me that I was disgusting, because of my dirty mind, that that was definitely the one for me!I got to see Shaun, Jack Zeek's young son, a nice looking bloke he was too! I got into the...

Steatham - The Dolls House

by Elodie_Caroline

Ever since I was at my first school, at nearly the age of 5, I had always wanted a Dolls house. I've always loved very small and intricate things. I was well into my late 30s, but had been looking into places that sold Dolls houses and had been to places in Chertsey and Windsor etc, but then I found an address for a place in Streatham. So, me, Chris, my sister Mel and my brother Derek, all packed into our car and drove all the way to Streatham to find this 'warehouse'. Hah! when we found it, what a disappointment! The place where customers could go was no bigger than someones small sitting room. Anyway, we had a bit of a look around and I did buy a flat packed dolls house, a San francisco bay old type house It cost me £80.00; once it was back home with us, Chris soon had it all built up and painted pink (of course!) for me.Whilst in Steatham,we decided to go and have dinner down one of...
