Victoria Monument

Favorite thing: Queen Victoria remains the most commemorated British monarch in history, with statues to her erected throughout the British empire.

Fondest memory: It is the most prominent statue is the Victoria Monument outside Buckingham Palace, which was erected as part of the remodelling of the facade of the Palace a decade after her death.

Tower of London - The Wharf
1 more image

Favorite thing: The great wharf at the Tower of London was built in stages during the 14th century, principally as a place where goods could be loaded and unloaded from boats on the river.

Fondest memory: In the following centuries it accommodated at different times cannon-foundries, a small arms factory and a gunpowder proof yard.

Tower of London - The Broad Arrow Tower

Favorite thing: This tower takes its name from the broad arrow that was stamped on goods to show their royal ownership.

Fondest memory: In later years the tower became a prison and contains many inscriptions made by prisoners who were held here in the 16th and 17th centuries

Tower of London - The Fusiliers' Museum

Favorite thing: The Museum of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers stands immediately to the north east of the White Tower and contains a wealth of exhibits relating to the many campaigns in which the regiment has participated during its 300-year history.

Fondest memory: The museum contains accounts and exhibits from the many campaigns the regiment has been involved in, such as the American War of Independence, the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the Gulf War.

The Cradle Tower

Favorite thing: this tower was used as a prison lodging - through its proximity to the Wharf made it rather unsuitable for this function, as was demonstrated in 1599 when two prisoners managed to escape from the tower.

Fondest memory: The upper storey was taken down in 1778 but rebuilt a century later.

Tower of London - Water Lane

Favorite thing: Water Lane was created by Edward I's expansion of the Tower in 1275-85 when the whole of the Outer Ward along the south was reclaimed from the river and a towered curtain wall constructed along the foreshore of the Thames.

Fondest memory: Before this time all the towers on the inner curtain wall stood on the river's edge, hence the name Water Lane

The Byward Tower

Favorite thing: This gatehouse was originally defended by two portcullises, one of which survives today together with a series of so-called 'murder holes' probably used to douse fires lit against the gates by intruders.

Fondest memory: Just beyond the gateway is a small postern gate, or private entrance, often used by royalty in the 15th and 16th centuries

The Bell Tower

Favorite thing: The Bell Tower is the oldest tower in the castle after the White Tower and dates from an early enlargement of the castle in the 1190s.

Fondest memory: The curfew bell has been rung from this tower for at least 500 years although the present bell dates from 1651.

Tower of London - The Wall Walk

Favorite thing: The Wall Walk runs along the eastern inner curtain wall from the Salt Tower to the Martin Tower. Much of this great wall, which encircles the castle, was built in the 1230s and 1240s

Fondest memory: The building of this towered curtain wall transformed the defences of the Tower of London, giving archers and missile-throwing machines an excellent command of the land around the castle.
