Updated with fares from Jan 08 There are five main airports serving London. In order of distance from the city centre, they are: London City (LCY) 7 miles east London Heathrow (LHR) 15 miles west London Gatwick (LGW) 25 miles south Luton (LTN) 26 miles north west London Stansted (STN) 30 miles north east Heathrow is the main scheduled airline international and intercontinental "hub"; Gatwick serves similar routes; Stansted serves mainly European business and holiday traffic; Luton is mainly used for scheduled and charter services to European holiday destinations; and London City is for short-haul business services to Europe. The map here shows all five airports in relation to each other, and the main transport links between them and with central London. There are direct rail links between all of them and central London as follows (prices are for a single ticket, correct as at Jan 08): Heathrow LHR - Paddington: Heathrow Express (15 mins, £14.50 online, £15.50 from ticket office or machine, £17.50 if you buy on board the train) LHR - Paddington: Heathrow Connect (25 mins, £6.90) LHR - Central London: Piccadilly Line (55 mins, £4 cash, cheaper with Oyster card) Gatwick LGW - Victoria: Gatwick Express (30 mins, £16.90) LGW - Victoria: Southern (30-40 mins, £8.90) LGW - London Bridge/St Pancras International: First Capital Connect, 30 mins, £8.90) Stansted STN - Liverpool Street: Stansted Express (45 mins, £15 online, £16 from ticket office) Luton LTN - St Pancras International/London Bridge (32 mins, £10.40; free shuttle bus service from Luton Parkway station to the airport) London City LCY - Bank: DLR (22 mins £4 cash, cheaper with Oyster card) There are also bus and coach links between all the airports and central London and other destinations. These are usually a bit cheaper than the rail fares, but take longer and are much less reliable. There are also regular coach services between the four main airports (www.nationalexpress.com).

There are at least 5 London Airports. The City Airport only really takes small short distance flights so you will probably not go to this airport. The best Airport to arrive at is London Heathrow (LHR), I believe it is the busiest airport in the world, and it certainly isn't the worlds nicest airport, but it is extremely convenient for getting in to the centre from as it is possible by bus, taxi, train and underground. The next best bet is London Gatwick (LGW) which is a bit further out of London (well it isn't really London at all, but near enough to make it reasonable). By the time you get to London Luton, you're starting to have a bit of imagination in terms of calling it a London airport. London Stanstead is a bit of a pain in the butt as it really is quite far away!

    To London Gatwick by plane
  • Tip Rating:
  • Gatwick is the UK's second busiest airport and situated about 45 km south of London. Probably the most convenient and fastest way to get from Gatwick to London city centre is by Gatwick Express. The modern train takes just 30 minutes from the airport to London Victoria. It runs every 15 minutes and tickets even can be purchased on the train at no extra cost. A much cheaper option to get to the heart of London are local trains. First Capital Connect runs direct services to e.g. London Bridge or St. Pancras International. Stansted is London's third international airport and well known as a hub for the low cost airlines Ryanair and easyjet. The airport is located about 48 km north-east of London and can be reached in about 45 minutes with the Stansted Express from Liverpool Street station. Other options to get to the airport include local trains and coach services. Stansted Express: http://www.stanstedexpress.com/ Stansted Airport: http://www.stanstedairport.com/

    London Airport City
  • Tip Rating:
  • What a good surprise to flight to this airport, which is located in the Docklands close to the City center. I flew with Swiss from Geneva and land to this very convenient airport. My LCY airport approach on board of the Swiss AVRO RJ100 was quite impressive with great views on the city before landing after a stunning but normal dive in direction on the runway. In fact the approach is done at 5.5 degrees or steeper (this compares with 3 degrees at most other airports). The way out was quick as only small aeroplanes are allowed to land (usually less than 100 passengers on board), currently test are made with an Airbus A319 in prospect of airport development. To reach quickly the city take the Docklands Light Railway London City Airport extension open since December 2005. Direct travel time to Bank in the City of London is a speedy 22 minutes and Canary Wharf is just 14minutes, via Poplar. Which is convenient for business purposes and travellers as well. London City Airport is situated just 10 miles (16km) from the West End (the major shopping centre) and Westminster (location of main government offices), six miles (10km) from the City of London (the financial district) and three miles (5km) from Canary Wharf (London's newest business and financial centre). A really quick and convenient experience... too bad that my return flight was from Heathrow...

Being the main hub for Ryanair and other budget carriers, Stansted clearly puts emphasis on low costs and maximised efficiency. It is not necessarily the most convenient airport to use. This is apparent in the main terminal with all the check-in booths lumped together leaving so little space that a queue in front of a check-in desk will seriously impede peoples' ability to get through. They also seem to save on the electricity bill, very dim light everywhere making one sleepy and uncomfortable. The airport is pretty far out of town, much closer to Cambridge than to London. It is well connected to the railway network; the travel time of 45 minutes to London Liverpool St. is not that bad, comparing it with other large city airports. But the price -- 22 quid for a return ticket -- is outrageous. There are also coach services with various routes available. Please note that most no-frills airlines open their check-ins no sooner than 90 minutes before the scheduled departure time, so it is absolutely unnecessary to arrive at the airport earlier than that only to hang around in that unpleasing terminal. For disabled travellers, there is a special seating/waiting area. It might be advantageous to use it -- if there is no power wheelchair or scooter occupying the electric plugs, you might be able to use your notebook computer without needing to rely on the batteries. Thanks to VTer HORSCHECK, I am now aware that the central terminal building actually was designed by Norman Foster, the architect who made those wonderful conversions of the German Reichstag and the British Museum. I still think the building is boring, maybe he let one of his apprentices do the designing...

London City airport in Docklands is easily the closest airport to the centre of the city as it is only in Zone 3/4 on the travelcard. It was mainly aimed at business users, but you can sometimes get cheap fares, especially if you get a choice of airports on your ticket following an intercontinental leg (eg to Amsterdam) When you take into account that the Stansted express train is £24 quid return (a complete rip-off) it often works out reasonably. You can now get to LCY directly from the following cities: Amsterdam. Antwep, Basel, Belfast City, Brussels, Cardiff, Cork, Dublin, Dundee, Frankfurt, Geneva, Glasgow, I of M, Jersey, Leipzig, Luxembourg, Manchester, Paris Orly, Rotterdam, Swansea and Zurich.

We flew round trip from/to London from Portland, Oregon, aboard Lufthansa airlines, which flew non-stop to Frankfurt, German (I've been in Germany!!), and then we changed planes in Frankfurt for the relatively short trip to Heathrow. It was my first international flight and a long one, but it was made immensely more enjoyable by the fact that at PDX airport in Portland we were upgraded unexpectedly and for no reason from coach to business class. What a difference! Special menus, more space, little amenities that I'd never before experienced (a little travel bag with such things as eyeshades and stockings). I really enjoyed having my own little television set attached to my seat. Coach cost was $831so I don't know what the business tickets would have cost. I couldn't help but go back and take a photo of the poor peons in coach. Of course on the return trip, that was us and an entirely different story (see next tip).
