Qantas 747b ... the only way to fly in the 70's
  • Tip Rating:
  • This was the most fabulous and modern way of going overseas in style back in the 70's. The Qantas 747b was the most advanced 747 version produced by Boeing. It stood as tall as a 6 storey building at the tail, and it's wings streched nearly 70.51m from tip to tip. The aircraft weighed approximately 345 tonnes fully laden and ready for take-off and had a cruising speed of 920km/h@10,666m. London Taxi Cab was the only way to go until we worked out the 'Tube' or the 'Underground' as I remember people calling it.At home we were used to a small and quiet RAAF based tropical city called Townsville, up in North Queensland Australia. As kids we got around on our push bikes and would come home when the sun went down... it was a great way of living. In London we could hardly understand what we were seeing thru the throngs of people and organised caos that greeted us... but we didn't want to miss a thing!London was a gobsmackingly whirl of cars, double-decker red buses and thousands of people massing at the trafficlights waiting to cross the road...All I wanted to know was, 'where had all the horse and carts gone'... and 'when were we going to see the Queen'.

  • Tip Rating:
  • London is supported by 5 major airports, Heathrow,Gatwick, Luton, Stanstead and City airport. All bar City have excellent rail services into London. Or if you are made of money get a Taxi into London. If you are coming in by Rail all routes lead to London. If you are in London for only a day or 2 the best way to get around and see the sights is to take the Big Bus. It is excellent value with a free River trip included. You can hop on and hop off as you please., A quick and easy way of seeing all the sights.

    Heathrow Airport (tel:...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Heathrow Airport (tel: 0181-759-4321) World's busiest international airport. Easiest way to get into London is by the Underground. Picadilly line - about 45 minutes to central London. Gatwick Airport (tel: 01293-535 353) Take BR Gatwick Express train to Victoria Station (daily 5am to midnight, every 15 min. Midnight to 5am approx every 30 min.) Here's a pic of the Virgin Atlantic plane we flew over from Toronto in July 2001, name of plane 'Island Queen', we went home on 'Dancing Queen.' I highly recommend that airline, they had great service and great food. I will admit, I had great service from the people at Heathrow airport on one of my journeys. I was changing planes, bound for Glasgow and my incoming flight was delayed. By the time we landed it was 25 minutes until my next flight. I was at the door of the plane when it opened, the steward letting me go first and I flew up the corridor knowing that I had to still go through customs and make it to another terminal. As I neared the end of the corridor I heard 'Passenger Hayward?' I screeched to a halt in front of the gentleman who informed me that I had been moved to a later flight as they didn't think I would make my original one. Well, I had to make it, I was meeting a boyfriend whom I hadn't seen in 8 weeks and if I could get this flight I was hell bent on it. The gentleman whipped out his walky talky, spoke quickly with someone and then hurried me back down the corridor I'd just raced down. Another gentleman met me and, before bemused eyes of my fellow passengers, led me through an outside doorway, down to a waiting van and then we sped to another terminal. Enroute he contacted another gentleman and he was waiting at the door to whisk me up the stairs, straight to the front of the security line and over to customs. From there I was on my own and I sweettalked my way to the front of the line, though one woman wanted to know where I was flying first. Did that matter?? My flight was leaving in 7 minutes!!! I guess she didn't realize the urgency of my situation. Anyway, I got through customs as quickly as possible and then raced like a bat out of hell for my gate which seemed to be miles away. I made it with less than 5 minutes to spare. The flight attendant was quite amused and poured me a glass of water as I was gasping for breath from my sprint through the terminal. Hey, at least I made it! :) So thank you Heathrow employees!

  • Tip Rating:
  • London is serviced by five airports Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stanstead and London City Airport. Travel between these and the city centre is easily accessible, with frequent train and bus services. The London Underground (called 'the tube') is the world's oldest subway system. Trains run regularly on a daily basis between about 05:30 and 00:30. There are plenty of bus routes in London, as well as other train services. When these three stop running (in the wee drinking hours) taxis and night buses are available. This makes it possible to get anywhere in and around London without a car.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Most people fly into Heathrow but our flight went to the other airport, Gatwick. From there, we took a train to Victoria Station. The London Underground is the best(and probably the cheapest) way to get around and the maps are easy to understand.

    International Flights come...
  • Tip Rating:
  • International Flights come into the UK from all over the world on a daily basis. London Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted are the most popular for those heading for the capital. Use the public transport system. If you are hiring a car you will find it impossible to park. If you use a taxi, use a black cab and not one of the many mini cabs. Black Cabbies have passed the knowledge, they know where they are going and how to get you there safely. Many Mini Cab Companies have sprung up all over London but the drivers seldom have a good standard of English and to be honest I am suprised that they find their way to work in the morning.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Train or bus and if from a distant, donīt jump on and take the flight to Stansted, it wont cost very much more to fly to Heathrow or London city airport if you add the fee for the long trainride. Be kind to your schedule and fly from London, not from the bush The tube of course but there is a charm with going by the old buses, be sure to try and understand the orientation of the busmap first, the innercity has about a million buses...
