London Pubs Are Everywhere!!!: What is Important in a London Pub !?!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Looking for an interesting pub in London? One with real ale and live music perhaps? Whatever your preferences, you are sure to find something to your liking ... 1st, I typed in London pubs located near Waterloo tube station. Wow! The search engine found 1196 pubs within 3 miles of Waterloo tube station. Now which one? Ok, so I then refined my search to: London pubs near Waterloo tube station with live music. OK, That helped narrow it down to only 19 pubs in the area. What else would I want in a pub for the evening? Available options: Pool table, Quiz machine, Fruit machines, Pinball table, Football, Dartboard, TV, Sky TV, Big screen, Jukebox , Live music, Quiz night, Late licence, Real ale, Food served, Sunday roast, Outside seating, Riverside location, Car park, Wireless internet access, By ratings I thought, "What is a fruit machine?" Never mind, all I want is some real ale, and live music with a decent rating by other patrons, and possibly some food to eat, in case I get hungry. After making the necessary changes on their easy to use site, i.e. real ale, food, live music near Waterloo tube station ... 5 Matches found! Nearly on my way. I notice the comments of actual paying customers, and a few seem really intriguing, so I click on ... and find ...Cozy and atmospheric, can be hard to find so mainly full of locals. A very friendly pub with an interesting history. There is a tunnel under the road leading to the hanging tree at Marble Arch as the prisoners used to be kept in the basement. Some nice little 'cubby-holes'. Sounds like this could be the one. The rating is good. A 7.3 out of a possible 10. The brewery is Hall and Woodhouse. Well, that means nothing to me, so not much help, but I am interested in a "locals" pub, so I think I will go check it out the next time I visit. The Masons Arms Address: 51 Upper Berkeley Street, London, W1H 7PP Tel: 020 7723 2131 There are also several nearby pubs listed, as well, within less than 1/2 mile radius. Seems there is a pub on every corner in London!

Judging from the comments below, I would say it's a casual dress code. They sell bottled wheat beer and the excellent Blandford Fly. What more can I say, except has anyone seen my sandals? Best pub around, even though it's not the most popular. Beer could be of a higher standard, and is best supped whilst sitting outside with a kebab bought from Edgware road Nice locals pub - and found a great little hidden booth (right behind the bar) - perfect for a few pints with a small group of friends. (or a slightly larger group of small friends) Pubs are an individual choice, and unless you have some clue about what you want, you could possibly wander into a disappointing experience. Using the tools provided by this web site, a tourist or a local can find something to suit any taste. There is even a "clickable" map for your destination to help to get you there, once you decide where you are going. Also, if you know the name of the pub you want to visit, just type in the name, and see what others have to say about it. Like Virtual Tourists, membership is not required to fully use the site. I found it to be interesting, helpful, and a bit of fun. Of course, this is no exact science, but I feel it is a much better alternative than being clueless. There is a bit more about it on my 'Local Customs' tips, along with some interesting differences in our dialect. The English language(s) ... 'Proper' and 'American English', There IS a difference! Mash: Mash - bar near Oxford Circus
  • Tip Rating:
  • One evening before dinner we needed somewhere to have a drink and we came across Mash. Located close to Oxford Circus, this is a large modern bar with its own Microbrewery. There is also a restaurant upstairs. When we stopped by it was around 7pm on a Friday night and the bar was packed full with the after-work crowd letting off steam at the end of the week. The noise inside the main part of the bar was deafening! How anyone could have a conversation in there I don't know. After buying two (expensive) drinks we managed to score a small table in the front section, by the main door, where we could at least have a chat. Ideally we would have sat at one of the tables out the front on the footpath, but these were in high demand. I liked the look of Mash, and it is conveniently located to Oxford Street, though a bit too noisy for me to bother returning.

    Work attire is fine

Doon: Doon - downstairs at Albannach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Doon is a 'late night cocktail lounge' located in the basement of the Albannach restaurant, just across the road from Trafalgar Square. I went there one night to celebrate VT'er Londonbabe's Hens night. We met up straight from work and the place was empty for a couple of hours, apart from us group of girlies sitting in one of cool 'vaults' sipping our wine and torturing the bride-to-be with all sorts of personal questions. The vaults are a cool feature - small booths set in the walls which are perfect for small groups or romantic interludes. Service throughout the evening was pretty good, with one friendly waiter dealing with us lovely ladies. We indulged in a series of their 'bar bites' as well - needed something to try and soak up some of that vino. The selection included Crab risotto balls, Venison sausages, Tempura king prawns, and good old potato wedges. I liked the feel and look of Doon and will definitely drag hubby here one evening for cocktails and conversation in our private vault.

    No need to go overboard

Lock 17 (Dingwalls): London's Legendary Music Venue
  • Tip Rating:

    David Ford and Francis -
    thanks BB!!

Formerly known as Dingwalls - now Lock 17, this legendary venue in Camden Lock has played host to countless bands and musicians in the past, such as Coldplay, Kirsty MacColl, Eric Clapton, The Ramones, Ian Drury and the Blockheads, Athlete, U2, The Undertones, Elvis Costello and Sigue Sigue Sputnik to name just a few. It is still a fabulous place to see new musical talent and we were there to see David Ford ( and who knows, maybe one day his name might be as famous as the aforementioned!) It's small and intimate interior has a capacity for around 500 and has disabled access and loos. There is table seating around the sides and at the back by the bar. The stage (just a raised platform really) is open, not surrounded with barriers and security staff. Unfortunately it's really dark inside and very difficult to get a good shot of the artists as there are just one or two red spotlights illuminating the proceedings! It does get very crowded so get there early to try to get a table. The doors opened at 7pm (tickets were ?8) but could be different when you go so check before you get there. The bar at the back is easily accessible and the service is quick, but you can also get pre-gig drinks upstairs in the Lock 17 bar if you get there early which means you don't have to stand outside waiting in the cold. We were there in January and found the temperature inside to be comfortable but I should imagine that on a summer night when the place is jumping, it could be really hot and stuffy! If you only go to one gig during your trip to London - go to Dingwalls.

Cafe Kick: Cafe Kick - Table Football on Exmouth Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • Café Kick is a small bar located on Exmouth Market. It is a lively, vibrant place, with friendly staff. A fairly narrow space, with table football at the front, and crowded tables to the side and rear. The mojitos are moreish, the food I tried was tasty and the atmosphere is great. Come with a small group of friends and eat, drink and be merry. Oh, and play some foosball if that's your thing.

    Anything goes

The Comedy Store: Mad and Bad!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This place is a definite Must See! You need to book tickets in advance though 'cos it gets packed!!!... It's a brilliant night out, with an international selection of comedians (WHO would do that job???) There was a Canadian guy, an Australian and a couple of British guys... and they were ALL fabulous. The crowd were so up for a good night out.... the beer was flowing... the jokes were coming thick and fast and they really knew how to make the house rock with laughter! The bar is impossible (almost!) to get to in the interval so a good idea is to buy a 4 pint jug. They also serve food.

Anything.... but it is a VERY popular venue for stag and hen parties! and the host will take the proverbial of anyone in the front row so be prepared!! Oh and the seats are first come first served so get there early otherwise you will be in a middle seat and have to climb embarrasingly over complete strangers to get there.. but you'll be best friends by the end of the night so no worries!!!!!

The Soho: The Soho - Wine Bar in Soho
  • Tip Rating:
  • Was meeting friends for dinner one night and wanted to meet for a drink before hand. While researching online for a suitable watering hole I came across a little bar called The Soho, conveniently located a 2 minute walk from the restaurant we were going to. So, The Soho it was. Not surprisingly, it is located in Soho, close to Soho Square. There is a small entrance off the street, which leads downstairs to the bar. You enter into the main bar area, and then there is some seating off that, and also some more secluded sections perfect for a small group or a romantic rendezvous. I liked the feel of the bar, although it was pretty quiet when we were there on a Monday evening. One of the benefits of being there when it was quiet was that it wasn't smoky or noisy, which was ideal for a girly gossip! It was happy hour when we arrived, and there were plenty of half price house cocktails to keep the girls amused. Kelly had a strawberry based one that was quite nice, though Anita wasn't too keen on her apple based one. I just stuck to a small glass of the house white wine, which was perfectly fine. Service was friendly and I would return next time I am looking for a pre-dinner tipple in the area.

    Tiger Tiger
  • Tip Rating:
  • Tiger Tiger is just the perfect place to start a fabulous VT meeting in the late afternoon in Central London. It consists of a bar, a restaurant, a lounge and a club. Tiger Tiger isn't as posh as it seems to be. During the happy hour from 5 pm to 7 pm most drinks and the bar food are available at half price. At this time of the day the music is still turned to a reasonable volume, so that funny conversations are possible. The lavatory attendant is very helpful at TigerTiger: He presses the soap dispenser and gives you the paper towels. He really deserves a tip.

    BUNCH of GRAPES: Pubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • A famous pub with Harrods, its world famous neighbour, just a couple of hundred meters away. The Grapes is very popular with tourists. They're in for a pleasure, as this gorgeous pub has keeped much of its original Victorian appointments. Take for example splendid etched and cut glass snob screens and exquisite painted mirrors by William James Co., renowned for their craftsman-ship. The building dates from 1844, the interior decor belongs to the end of the 19th century. Mon-Sat 12.00-23.00 Sun 12.00-22.30 11
