Wembley Arena: A Bigger Venue for a Legend
  • Tip Rating:
  • Saw Cher here back in May 04. All the mega-stars play Wembley Arena - if you are visiting London check out the website to see who's here. Tickets might set you back about 50 quid though so be prepared!!! (Cher was worth every penny - it was a fabulous night!!!) We made a couple of great friends and stayed at the Holiday Inn, Victoria.

Well..... for Cher..... you gotta make the effort - ( the guys WILL out-gorgeous the gals - and sailor-suits are de rigeur!!)

Theatre is a MUST While in London: London Symbolizes Fine Theatre...
  • Tip Rating:
  • London's West End is the heart of London's theatreland. Although it's less than a square mile area, it's the place to see big musicals, farce, revival plays from yesteryear, or transfers from Broadway. When I was in London, "The Mousetrap" (an Agatha Christie detective story) was still playing and had been since 1952! The best of the theatres in this area were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s such as the Lyric, Wyndoms, the London Pavilion and the Coliseum. Today, if you want to enjoy the "ornamentation of London's theatre", you should go to either Fortune Theatre near Covent Garden, Her Majesty's in the Haymarket, or the Palace Theatre in Cambridge Circus. Of course, there are hundreds of other theatres dotted all over the city which you may wish to attend...my message is: "JUST ATTEND!" While in London for one week, Jill and I saw four plays: 3 Musicals & 1 Drama. The Musicals were: "Buddy", "Back to the Forbidden Planet", "Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat". The Drama was Dr. Jeckell and Mr. Hyde" I enjoyed the musical "Buddy" (life of Buddy Holly) and the psychological drama, "Jeckle & Hyde" the most. If you have the opportunity, visit the famous Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, which many Londoners feel is the finest theatre in the city. It is the oldest still in use. Outside, it does not look grand; however, inside it is quite beautiful. Since it's very expensive, you might wish to just walk into the grand foyer as far as the box office. Remember to dress appropriately.

From my personal point of view, whenever going to the theatre, dress up. You don't need formal clothing, but something quite nice.

    Theatreland
  • Tip Rating:
  • A visit to a show in London is a definite "Must Do" while staying in the capital. There are loads of theatres in the West End, Shaftsbury Ave, Strand, Covent Garden area - with something to suit all tastes. The best place to buy cheap(ish!) tickets is at the famous ticket booth in Leicester Square. London Theatres and the Official London Theatre Guide

Some people like to dress up when they visit the theatre but it's not really necessary. Do remember that many London theatres were built for teensy weensy Victorians and as such, seats are often acutely lacking in leg room! Ask for an aisle seat if you need to stretch out a bit!

  • This is a part cocktail bar, part club, part restaurant. All three merging into one, at some point. The food is top class and so are the drinks. Amazing cosmopolitans mixed by the most charming barman in London! Don't miss out!

Callaghans: Irish Bar in "The Palace"
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the ground floor of our hotel "Regents Palace" is an Irish Bar. There was a brilliant band playing there at the weekend called "Crack". They played all requests - and were very happy to do Pink Floyd and Lynard Skynnard numbers... they were fantastic.

    The Adam And Eve: Pubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • There has been a pub here since at least 1729, which makes it a bit too modern for poet John Milton who wrote Paradise Lost when he lived in Petty France. Author John Cleland was a slightly later resident - he was given a residence rent free on his 'engaging to write nothing more of the same description' as his bawdy novel Fanny Hill. Although it has been rebuilt since, it does have a good historic feel - the decor hasn't been altered too much in a recent spruce up. There is lots of dark wood everywhere; mostly bare floors, etched glass partitions, and wainscotting on the walls, which are adorned with some decent quirky old pictures. It has some very nice old lamps.Office which was formerly a few doors along. It is one of those pubs that can get fairly packed at times and be a bit of a barren wilderness at others...

    The Albert: Pubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • This pub has survived the Blitz and redevelopment. It has not been intimidated by the skyscrapers that surround it, (Albert) pud stands proud against its bland neighbours. It was built in 1864, before that it was called the Bluecoat Boy, and was named in honour of Queen Victoria's husband. There is a big choice of bar meals, a restaurant with a traditional menu and good range of real ales. Mon-Sat 11.00-23.00 Sun 12.00-22.30 11

    The George: Pubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dating back to 1723, when it was a coffeee house frequented by fops and dandies. Very nice old pub with mock medieval half-timbering both inside and out plus the odd spots of stained glass. It has a pleasant bright atmosphere . Although the sign outside picture of King George III, this place took its name from its original owner George Simpkins. Former locals that also have been here , Oliver Goldsmith, Horace Walpole, Samuel Johnson and the the conman Henry Perfect. 11

The George Inn: Have a pint in Shakespere's old boozer...probably
  • Tip Rating:
  • The George Inn in Southwark is now very firmly on the tourist trail, especially with the development of the South Bank area and inparticular the Globe Theatre. The Gabled coaching inn, which has been restored by the National Trust has been a boozer since the early 16th Century and still serves up some excellent ales now. I would unwaveringly recommend the 'George Ale' which is specially brewed for the Pub by Adnams in Suffolk, one of our finest English Brewers. Shakespere is known to have had lodgings nearby, and before the development of theatres it was in courtyards like this that travelling theatre companies performed. The courtyard is still there, although nowadays it is filled with benches and gas heaters to keep the chill off the tourists enjoying a pint or three. The place also does traditional food as well. We can but speculate upon how some plots would have altered if he enjoyed one two many many bevvies in this haunt. To Beer or not to Beer that is the question... What is this I see before me....another beer, my good man ! Now is the evening of our content...
