The Mean Fiddler: Metallica at the Mean Fiddler
  • Tip Rating:
  • Having seen them first in the Netherlands at the HuntenPop Festival (see Doetinchem page!) we went to see those fab Finnish guys in leather again!! This time it was at the Mean Fiddler in Charing Cross Road. We queued with Goths and headbangers in the light London drizzle whilst being entertained by colourful local drunks. Eventually we made our way into the deep dark cavernous depths where were spent an evening listening to Breed 77 (who were supporting their new Finnish friends) and of course the amazing APOCALYPTICA!!! Finlands ROCK GODS!!

Anything - as long as it's black - and preferably leather. Oh and if you are female and over a size 20 - then it's a tartan mini skirt, low cut top and black plaits.

    The Old Bell: Pubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • This pub was built in the 1670's for the workmen and masons who were rebuilding St. Brides Church, it was destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. The Olde Bell has been a licensed tavern for more than 300 years Caxton's apprentice, Wynkyn de Worde, moved the printing business to Fleet Street in 1500. The rest is history. Alas, the newspapers and printers have gone, but the Olde Bell still does brisk trade. Mon-Fri 11.00-23.00 Sat 12.00-18.00 CLOSED Sun 11

    The Shakespeare: Pubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Close to a station in the centre of town, this pub mainly cater to tourists and passing trade. It is usually busy, both day and nights. The decor has been chanded from traditional tourist pub style to bright designer pub style - no improvement. 'Traditional English Food' 11

The Trafalgar Tavern: Pubs - MUST SEE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wren's Royal Naval College overlooking one of the finest stretches of the Thames. The present building was built by architect Joseph Kay in 1837 and named in honour of Nelson's famous victory, although an older pub on this site called The George may well date back to the 11th century. Between 1915 and 1965, when it was used as an institute for retired merchant seamen, for flats and as a Working Men's Club, it retains much fine decor - and its atmosphere - a mix of opulence and and creaking darkness. Now divided into three parts: the main bar lined with a fine collection of naval prints and the odd oil portrait, a posh restaurant bit at the back - for which you'll have to wait to be seated and an even posher upstairs bit (available for hire) complete with chandeliers and fine views. The architectural details are excellent with patterned stucco ceilings and ornate fireplaces, pillars, corbels etc. Oh, and the garden is very pleasant 11

Dock Blida Wine Bar: Dock Blida Wine Bar - Baker Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dock Blida is a small basement wine bar & restaurant, located just off Baker Street, in Central London. Look for the small street entrance, descend the stairs and open the large door into this underground cave. When I visited Dock Blida with my friend Anita on a Monday night it was pretty quiet, but service was very friendly and the atmosphere was still good. The bar is candle lit and moody, with a main seating area, and then several smaller alcoves where you can cosy up with a loved one, or have a few drinks with a group of friends in your own private area. There is a decent wine list, cocktails and the usual other drinks to choose from. There is also a Tapas menu if you need something to munch on while relaxing with your drink/s. If you want something a little more substantial to drink, why not try Dock Blida's restaurant, Cellar Restaurant, which is located even further below ground.

    Smart casual is fine

    The Barley Mow: Pubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Its hard to imagine that the Barley Mow was once a farmers pub. Once inside, there's definitely a village pub atmosphere. Built in 1791 the Barley Mow,IT claims to be the oldest pub in Marylebone. As London expanded and rural areas were disapering, and the clientele changed. The farmers were replaced by grooms and footmen. They must have been constantly short of cash, as one of the early landlords converted part of the bar into a licensed pawnbrokers. Two small wooden cubicles to one side of the bar are an idea borrowed from the pawnbrokers' shop. Mow may be the only ones thats survive in London. OPEN Mon-Sat 11.00-23.00 Closed Sunday 11 FOOD Bar 11.30-15.00

    The Clarence: Pubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Not a bad place but you would not want to spend a the whole evening. A lot of wood everywhere - a good place to bring your pet woodworm for a night out. It's handy for 10 Downing St in case of a sudden military coup or peasants revolt. Don't try to get breakfast here :) 11

All the Movie Houses in Leicester Square: London Cinema in Leicester Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • The West End, home of cinema in London, is Leicester Square. North, east, and south are four large cinemas: Empire, Warner West End, Odeon, Odeon West. All were built between 1900-1940, and all four have wonderful architectural features. This area is nothing spectacular except for the Hampshire Hotel. Oh, yes, I've been told that there's a great restaurant to the west called Swiss Centre. This area is a special place because most film premieres and Royal Command film performances occur here. It almost seems like a small version of Hollywood. In Victorian times, several Music Halls were established and that included the Empire Cinemain the photograph. Of course, at that time, there were no neon lights! Also, within recent times, refurbishing of the center square has happened, and there is now a booth that sells cut-price theatre tickets. Also, a statue of Charlie Chaplin is in this Square as is The Shakespeare Fountain (1874).

The first night I was in London, Jill and I saw the movie called "Dead Again". It was very exciting to say the least. On New Year's Eve, Jill and I saw the movie "London is Killing Me". We phoned in to the theatre and made reservations using my Master Card. I was amazed about that at the time. Not only did we reserve a ticket to see the movie, but we also had assigned seats!

Notting Hill Arts Club: It's Notting Hill - but no Hugh Grant
  • Tip Rating:
  • Notting Hill Arts Club hold live music events on Saturday afternoons/evenings FREE between 4pm-8pm. It's a small and intimate venue ( that means you can actually see the performers rather than just the persons head in front of you). The unassuming wooden double doors situated between a TexMex restaurant and a hairdressers give no indication that it's a buzzing gig venue - so look carefully at the little *Notting Hill Arts Club* notice pinned next to the door. Oh and even if you have been told doors open at 4pm - they probably won't - sound checks always take forever and you will have to go away and come back later until they are completed - there's plenty of pubs in the area to go and sit and have a drink and keep warm while you are waiting! We were there to see Shady Bard (described somewhere as *electro-techno-folk* - whatever that means!) - and most of the crowd seemed to be mostly made up of family and friends - I don't think I've been to a gig before where the lead says *and thanks to my parents for the guitars and stuff* at the end - it was fun though and there's also a nice bar and seating area to chill out before, during and after the gig.

Anything - but definitely not the stripey orange and black *Wicked Witch of the North* tights with black high heels that one strange woman was wearing.
