St James' Church: An American in Piccadilly
  • Tip Rating:
  • The American is not me... rather the divine and delectable Josh Ritter, singer/songwriter from Idaho, who me and P have seen perform three times now. We discovered that he was appearing here at the most beautiful small(ish) venue in the heart of the West End... St James' Church. (The poet William Blake was baptised here). They hold lunch time concerts too .. so if you are passing by Jermyn Street... pop in and have a look .. it has a beautiful interior. Anyway... Josh was up to his usual fabulous standard and the whole place was rockin' by the end of the evening.

    Annnnnnyyyythhhhingggg!!!!

    The Bedford: One Taste Festival
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another blast at the Bedford in Balham - this time for the One Taste festival - held monthly, it's a whole day of music, spokenword, comedy, arts and diverse cultural events and experiences in what is probably one of the best live music pub venues in London. For £15 you can spend the day going between the three floors of entertainment to hear and see and experience a whole host of quality performances - all put together by a dedicated team of 25 staff. They give you a free goody bag of all kinds of *stuff* too :)) This is really not to be missed - THIS is where the up and coming young, London talent perform - DON'T miss it!!! The vibrant and friendly pub is open throughout and serves great food between 7pm and 9pm. It can get VERY busy though so plan your itinerary carefully if you are hoping to eat there as you could easily miss a gig. Ohhh yes.. the Festival organisers run a brilliant raffle and blondie won a guitar!!! (see third pic) .. she was after the violin really... but a reconditioned Gibson guitar is NOT to be sneezed at :)) Good on ya girl!! The Bedford Check the website for listings.

    Absolutely anything.

The Bedford: Having a Blast at The Bedford
  • Tip Rating:
  • Petra and I wanted to see Steve Reynolds performing so we came up to London on a work night and, not to sure of the venue or what to expect, were very pleasantly surprised. This pub rocks. It's a huge pub, very friendly hardworking staff, and friendly clientel too but best of all... the whole show is FREEE!!!!. Thursday night is acoustix night in the Shakespearean Globe room, and the singer/songwriters perform in a *carousel* - they take it in turns to do a couple of numbers and then come back again in the second half, after a short 20 minute interval. Needless to say Steve Reynolds was the best! The whole show is recorded live on the internet so check out their website for more info. We met up with some great friends (oh and the food is fab too!) Another great night was The Bedford "Christmas Party" where we saw David Saw and John Hogg - two hugely talented singer/songwriters.

    smart/casual, anything really!

Shepherds Bush Empire: *Babylon* at the Empire
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another great night at Shepherds Bush Empire to see one of my all time favourite singers, David Gray. Tickets were £27.50 for standing which seems to be the standard ticket price here for the bigger names - seated is more but I've never had a seat ticket so I am not sure how much . If you want to be near the front, get here early and expect to queue. It gets absolutely packed but there is air conditioning.

    Anything

    Chinawhite: Chinawhite
  • Tip Rating:
  • Chinawhite isn't as it once was. Not as exclusive, but it's still pretty cool I think. It has got an oriental interior. It's members only only wednesdays, fridays, saturdays and thursdays. The bouncers are very unfriendly! So be aware...

Lock 17: Cool Bar in a Hot Town
  • Tip Rating:
  • A scorching summer Saturday in Camden and we were looking for a long cold drink in a cool shady place. Et voila! Lock 17 - urban trendy coolness in the heart of Camden Town. This ultra modern bar is situated on Camden Lock just over the Jongleurs Comedy club. It has a large open plan bar area with lovely squishy leather sofas and an airy mezzanine. Unfortuately the staff all seemed to be newbies - we asked for drinks without ice - we got ice - I asked how much? The girl behind the bar didn't know the price of the drinks before she checked it on the till - and another woman asked for a tonic water and,on her first sip, discovered they had put gin in it without asking! I overheard another woman asking about food.... the staff didn't know if there was any food or what time it was likely to be served (it was already lunch time). Not good for a bar-restaurant is it really?? We weren't there for food, which is just as well. We watched the world go by for a while before moving on. Lock17 for full listings of events

Lots of young trendies. Seemed to be the kind of place Aussie surf dudes like to chill out in. Wear what you like is what I am trying to say!

Dirty Dick's - MUST SEE: Pubs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dirty Dick's is a venerable pub in Bishopsgate, London, United Kingdom, a short walk from Liverpool Street station. Its name refers to its original owner, an ironmonger called Nathaniel Bentley, who suffered a nervous breakdown after his fiancé died the day before their wedding. He locked the room in which the wedding feast was laid out and never cleaned the house again. When he died in 1804 his shop was sold, eventually being converted into a pub. His dead stuffed cats and other possessions were put on display It was cleared up in the 1980s for health and safety reasons, although it still retains much of its character. Now a Young's tied house, the pub sells a range of real ales and other beers on draught and in bottles and boasts three separate bars on different levels.

    Nightlife and Plenty of it.
  • Tip Rating:
  • London by night is amazing. Clubs, pubs, restaurants and theatres. There is so much to see and do. The buzzing area of Leicester Square and Covent Garden with the street entertainers and musicians. You don't need a lot of cash to enjoy being there either. just wandering round the streets or over the many bridges that span the river Thames is pleasure itself.

    Carvosso's at 210: Carvosso's at 210 - in Chiswick
  • Tip Rating:
  • Carvosso's had been on my radar since it opened in late 2006, so when a dinner with family was arranged in Chiswick I suggested we meet there first for a drink. It is a stylish looking wine bar and "eating house", though I was only interested in the wine on this occasion. The bar area is split over two floors, along with a pretty outdoor section, where we sat. Table service was on offer, though to speed things along a bit I popped into the bar to grab a wine list and a cocktail list. The wine list was pretty thorough, with a good selection by the glass as you would expect. Prices were reasonable for the area, with 3 glasses of wine and a cocktail costing less than £20. Carvosso's had a good atmosphere, filled with more refined characters than some of the pubs nearby. I will definitely return and may well try some of the food next time.

    Smart casual is fine

Horniman at Hays: Horniman at Hays - Pub near London Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Horniman at Hays is a large pub located by the River Thames, between London Bridge and Tower Bridge. It is part of a refurbished wharf called Hays Galleria, and is a popular place for tourists thanks to its prime position by the river. The pub is spread out over a couple of levels. It happily has two non-smoking areas - the upstairs mezzanine area and the downstairs Wharfside Cellar bar. There is also a large terrace area outside by the river, which appeared to be heated. There is a small food menu, serving mainly traditional 'pub-style' food - I didn't eat there, but the desserts did sound tasty ; ) One lovely winters evening a small group of VT'ers were checking out the 'Switched On London' illuminations happening in the area, and we popped into the Horniman at Hays for a mid-walk drink. Service was a bit slow, but it was nice and cosy inside and not too crowded.

Well, they served a scraggly group of VT'ers, so I guess they'll serve anyone!
