Tower Place - new architecture
All Hallows through the atrium - London
All Hallows through the atrium

Tower Place is one of London's new glass and steel buildings. It is, in fact, two seven-storey blocks that are joined by a vast atrium, and they replace an old 14 storey block. The architects, Foster & Partners, have been able to restore views and sightlines that have been lost for years. The atrium, accessible by the public, has trees, seats and fountains and looks over All Hallows Berkynge by the Tower. Terraces on the seventh floor provide magnificent views along the Thames.

Modern ruins: The remains of the London Tram
Kingsway tram underpass - London
Kingsway tram underpass

Send Photo to a Friend
Until the early 1950s, central London had a tram system, but this was abandoned like in many other european cities. One of the few remaining ruins from this era is the underpass at Kingsway, just a few meters away from Holborn tube station. You can still see the railways and the former source for electricity right in the middle. In the past decades, a tram system was built in the southern suburbs of London, but that one has nothing to do with the old one. To learn more about the background of this ruin visit the webpage below. If you are looking for similar "modern ruins", you will find some in the tube system. The page below has some good info sbout them too.

    Animals in War Statue
Unveiled in 2004, the Animals in War statue was commissioned by the Imperial War Museum as a tribute to the animals that have served in the wars of the 20th century, there are two bronze mules, a horse and a dog with a panel featuring the other animals, dolphins, elephants, pigeons and glow worms (what they were used for I haven't the foggiest idea) The monument is located on Park Lane on a grassy median just south of Marble Arch and just east of Hyde Park.

    Liberty store clock
Very near the Oxford Circus tube station you'll spy this tudor style building, I didn't actually realize that it was a store until I got home and looked it up but apparently it houses the Liberty Store. I was more interested in the exterior and the clock. The clock on the outside of the Liberty store features St. George, the patron saint of England, chasing the dragon, usually the dragon gets skewered in paintings and sculpture but it appears as though he survives at the Liberty Store. Perhaps he gets speared on the hour but as I was there at 10 after, I wasn't going to stick around to find out. The inscription under the clock reads "No Minute Gone Comes Ever Back Again, Take Heed And See Ye Nothing Do in Vain". I couldn't find the source for this quote, if anyone knows please drop me a note. Located at 210-220 Great Malborough Street, near Regent's Street

    Victoria Tower Gardens
Victoria Tower Gardens is a public park along the north bank of the River Thames - as it's name suggests, it is adjacent to the Victoria Tower, the south-western corner of the Palace of Westminster. The park extends south from the Palace to Lambeth Bridge, sandwiched between Millbank and the river, also forms part of the Thames Embankment.
