When shopping on Oxford Street, take a break for a coffee or lunch in St Christopher's Place. It is like an oasis from the throng of high street shoppers. It is located just off Oxford Street and has one of the largest concentrations of pavement dining in central London. The area is often used as a back drop for film shoots and apparently is a good place for celebrity spotting. The coffee at Carluccio's comes recommended. St Christopher's Place is close to Selfridges department store. The nearest tube is Bond Street. Leave a Comment

the temple area is a little known part of london that i just happened to get lost in! this area, located not too far from the strand, is a series of twisting alleys, with buildings everywhere, courtyards etc. it's almost like a little private community. this is where all the lawyers are. they live here, have offices here, every single door had some lawyer or judges name. apparently, many many years ago, many of the lawkeepers of london decided to group together and live in the one area, close to the bar. and so, the inner & outer temple is here today, still carrying on that tradition of having the lawmakers live and work in this area. for me, a wander through the buildings and old cobblestone paths was a highlight, as was having an old perve in a porsche ask if i wanted a lift. um no thanks love! I remember about fifteen years ago, Spitalfields market in the early hours of the morning. A vast area of fruit and vegetable warehouses selling every imaginable thing from all corners of the globe. The streets, never designed for such beasts, were gridlocked by articulated lorries from all over Europe and the "ladies of the night" cruised to satisfy the baser urges of the drivers so far from home. Chaotic and interesting as it was, it really couldn't continue, and the market moved to a suburb in Leyton in 1991. The beautiful building (completed in 1893) remained, however, and what to do with it? With a foresight not normally associated with planners in London, Spitalfields has now re-invented itself as a great market for all kinds of things, not merely fruit and veg. It is well worth a visit , especially on a Sunday (the busiest day) when you can buy anything from Greek Orthodox religious icons through second hand books and rare records to very fine organic sausages! I thoroughly recommend it. It is situated in Commercial Street E1 and the nearest tubes (underground / metro) are Liverpool Strret and Aldgate East (about equidistant). It is open Mon-Fri 11am-3pm & Sun 9.30am-5.30pm. It is right opposite the Ten Bells public house (see seperate off the beaten track page) and a mere five minutes walk from Petticoat lane market (see tourist trap page) and right in Jack the Ripper country, so you can combine a couple of things in this very historic area. If you fancy an easy day trip out of London, why not head to Windsor and visit the castle. Windsor Castle is located 37kms west of London, and has been home to the Royals for over 900 years. You can wander around the gardens and at certain times you can visit the state rooms. The town of Windsor is also worth checking out and there are plenty of places to eat and get warm - especially if you go in January like we did! You can catch the train from London Paddington to Windsor - it takes less than 1 hour (www.thetrainline.com) or it is also an easy drive. Leave a Comment

Most of the people while travelling in London they miss out some of the most beautiful paths here. Normally people come to London for sales and to visit the great touristic paths shown in the tourist guides. There are some good off Beaten Path in London that I have discovered while being here and asking the local people. Other I just found in my way of walking through the city while taking photographs. The Kensington Roof Gardens are one of the most unique and beautiful Off Beaten Paths in London. They are located on the roof of one of the buildings around High Street Kensington, close to the tube station over the right hand side..... Are three styles, each of them with very particular and vibes details. Also there is a big restaurant and nightclub in the middle of the gardens and booking with time, you can enjoy an amazing view with nice food and sometimes, nice music too. Do not miss it next time! or you will regret so much. Address: 99 Kensington High Street, London, W8 5ED closest tube station: High Street Kensington :-) Leave a Comment

If you fancy a day trip out of London, why not head for historic Bath. Bath is a beautiful town located less than 2 hours drive west of London. It is the perfect place to spend a day (or longer) roaming around the cobbled streets, visiting the famous bath spa and sampling some of Baths great cuisine. For many years I have wanted to visit the Tomb of Karl Marx in Highgate Cemetery so while Petra and I were in London we took the tube to Archway and walked up Highgate Hill - you will need to turn into Waterlow Park and follow the signs. It's not as far as it looks on the map in the park! There are two "sides" to the cemetery, east and west. On the west side are the more Gothic tombs and there are guided tours on the hour. But Karl isn't here so we went to the east side. There was a hung over young man selling tickets for £2 for the privilege of wandering amongst the dead and if you want to photograph them (or rather their monuments) it's another quid (£1) for a camera permit. Don't be fooled into thinking his hangover has dulled his wits though! - I bought a 50p postcard of Karl Marx's tomb (I knew my photos would be rubbish - it was a kind of a safety measure!) and I gave him a pound - and he "conveniently forgot" to give me change - until of course I reminded him!! There is a big sign (which I missed!!) saying "NO SMOKING, NO DRINKING, NO EATING". I sat on a bench and enjoyed my chocolate brownie and a bottle of water .... it was only as I was leaving that I saw the sign... but what the heck... the dead don't care. . Oh and it is a beautiful, peaceful place to visit and the families have probably taken out HUGE mortgages on these tombs... so please.... respect the deads! Leave a Comment

Mostly using the Internet is quite expensive in London. For e.g. at the tourist information place you can pay 1 pund just for 20 minutes. I've found one place where you can use internet from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. just for 2 pounds. Have you found more cheaper?... Where to find it: not so good thing is that this internet cafe isn't at the center. It's located between Lewisham and Catford (London SE 13) at the south-eastern part of London. Walking through the Lewisham High street towards Catford you will see a big Catford sign with a huge cat on it in your right. Then turn to the left at Brownhill street and just next to the bus stop you'll see audio-video shop where on the left will be an internet cafe. Leave a Comment

Due to constant and on-going efforts by the river authorities, the Thames is now considered to be one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. Salmon have recently been spotted here. I spotted this Unilever contraption floating between Blackfriars and Southwark Bridge. I am not too sure what it does, but if it is cleaning up the Thames then it's ok with me :)) Update 16.10.06 - the body of a young male otter was found yesterday in the Thames at Wapping. This is the first time in over 100 years that otters have been seen this far up the river and is great news, showing how much work has been done by the Environment agency and other conservation groups to clean up the Thames and make it a better environment for wildlife.
