1000 Square meters of Mosaic art
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the best places to see public art, and also appreciate how an underground station can also be a place of joy, then visit Tottenham Court Road Tube station.

The Mosaics were designed by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi and put in during the 1980's refurbishment. Many of the themes he picks up on are to do with the locality (such as the British Museum) or life on the tube : such as the reference to buskers which I've used in the photograph.

If you want to see how NOT to refurbish a station, then compare it to Piccadilly circus which looks like it was decorated from leftover tiles from a downmarket Italian Pizzeria.

    Petticoat Lane
  • Tip Rating:
  • Early Sunday morning we took the tube to Liverpool Street Station and walked round the corner to Middlesex Street (the actual name for Petticoat Lane). Sadly the market here is not what it used to be. It was quiet and there was not such a variety of stalls or colourful stall holders as there used to be. There are mostly just clothes stalls and cheap jewellery, a few toys and shoes. We didn't buy anything, despite the low prices.

    A Woman Scorned
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the shadow of Big Ben at the end of Westminster Bridge is a statue of Queen Boadicea. In about 60 CE, the Romans killled her husband, head of a Celtic tribe, raped their two daughters and flogged Boadicea. This put her in a highly irritated state of mind so she took an army of several thousand and scared the togas off the Romans, almost defeating them. I understand that there were tens of thousands of soldiers killed and she was captured and imprisoned where she later died. The cause of her death is still debated. This is a wonderful statue, done around 1900 and donated to the city of London by the artists son. It is easy to catch if you do a Thames cruise which starts or ends at Westminster Bridge.

    Library and Museum of Freemasonry
  • Tip Rating:
  • Normally, I do not list things that I did not do. I am making an exception because I didn't even know this place existed until it was too late. I learned of it from a pamphlet I got at John Keats' House. "The Library and Museum of Freemasonry houses one of the finest collections of Masonic material in the world". Items belonging to famous and royal Freemasons are on display together with examples from the museum's collection of prints, engravings, and photographs.

Bizarre Baby Sculpture at St Martin in the Fields

  • Bizarre Baby Sculpture at St Martin in the Fields - London
    Bizarre Baby Sculpture at
    St Martin in the Fields
    by easyoar

This was a hard tip to categorize! It obviously is intended to have religious significance as it is located in the porchway of St Martin in the Fields (which is on Trafalgar Square).

It is entitles "In the Beginning" which re-emphasizes the religious aspects of it. The baby is shown emerging from a large lump of rock. There are a couple of steps in place to help you get high enough up so that you can look down on this sculpture. The umbilical cord is also seen disappearing into the rock.

As this is in the outside porch of St Martin in the Fields, the church itself does not need to be open for you to be able to see this.

Walls of Westminster Abbey it's a sburial place of famous people . One of pices - the memory plate of Captain James Cook and sir Francis Drake

James Cook (October 27, 1728 (O.S.) - February 14, 1779) was an English explorer, navigator, and map maker. He made three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which large areas were accurately charted, and several islands and coastlines recorded for the first time on European maps. His most notable accomplishments were the British discovery and claiming of the east coast of Australia, the European discovery of the Hawaiian Islands, and the first circumnavigation and mapping of Newfoundland and New Zealand.
The esteem in which the Captain was nevertheless held by the natives resulted in his body being retained by their chiefs and elders (possibly for partial human consumption, though this assertion remains contentious) and the flesh cut and roasted from his bones. Indeed some of Cook's remains, disclosing some corroborating evidence to this effect, were eventually returned to the British for a formal burial at sea following an appeal by the crew.

Sir Francis Drake, Vice Adm, (c.1540 - January 28, 1596) was an English privateer, navigator, naval pioneer and raider, politician, civil engineer, and boating enthusiast of the Elizabethan period. He was the first captain to completely circumnavigate the globe (Magellan did not live to finish his. It was finished by Juan Sebastian Elcano). He was also second in command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588.
He was buried at sea in a lead coffin near Portobelo in Panama.

Old Kent Road former fire station

  • Old Kent Road old fire station - London
    Old Kent Road old fire

Once it must have been a busy place with fire fighters on alert . I can imagine them getting into their heavy suits, helmet on and rush out in their red car, fully equiped to put down that fire and safe lives.

Nowadays this fire station on Old Kent Road seems to be turned into an antique shop. Still it is a nice building, breathing nostalgy.

Old Kent Road is a street in South of London.
In old times it was this road on which horse driven carriages were rushing towards... Kent ofcourse, as the name says it.
Nowadays it is a 2 x 2 busy traffic road, running from the Bricklayer's Arms Roundabout to meet with the New Kent Road; Tower Bridge Road and Great Dover street, bringing you to New Cross.

    Note:

Old Kent Road should be the cheapest location on the London Monopoly board? Let me know if I am wrong !

    Cleopatra's Needle
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the Victoria Embankment, the oldest monument in London, Cleopatra's Needle, stands nearly 60 feet high. It's made of pink Egyptian marble built in 1475 BC. This Obelisk was first erected in Heliopolis (now a suburb of Cairo) and is older than London itself! This monument was later moved to Alexandria where it remained for centuries.

It was presented to Britain in the early 1800s by theTurkish Viceroy of Egypt. It cost about 15,000 pounds to transport and was almost lost at sea.

Eventually, it was erected on the Victorian Embankment where a Victorian time capsule was buried underneath it. The time capsule includes a newspaper, set of coins, iron ropes, razor, box of pins, four Bibles in different languages, train timetable, and photographs of 12 of the most beautiful women of the day.

The reason I know so much about Cleopatra's Needle is because I'm so attracted to any Obelisk that when I see one, I try to discover all that I can about it.

Unfortantly, my photo did not turn out. This is from a pamphlet.

    House on Highgate Hill
  • Tip Rating:
  • I love this area of Camden... I used to come here a lot years ago and it was nice to revisit again! It was such a beautiful Sunday morning when Petra and I took a slow stroll up the hill to Waterlow Park and this house just looked so lovely in the sunshine.
