WESTMINSTER ABBEY The College Garden
  • Tip Rating:
  • College Garden occupies a site that has been under continuous cultivation for more than 900 years. It was here that the Abbey's first Infirmary garden was established in the eleventh century. The Infirmarer, a Senior Monk of the Abbey, had care of the sick and elderly members of the monastic community as well as administering a dispensary for local people. He would have directed the planting and cultivation of the various herbs needed for medicinal purposes in the Infirmary. Some of these herbs, such as fennel and hyssop, are still grown in the garden today. Westminster Abbey is the crowning and burial place of British monarchs. It has its world famed Poet's Corner with memorials to Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, the Bronte's sisters, Tennyson, Longfellow, Wordsworth, Burns, Dickens, Thackeray, Hardy, Kipling and other leading writers. Only a few however, are actually buried there. Here too is that touching symbol of a nation's grief, The Grave of the Unknown Warrior.

    Autumn on Hampstead Heath
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hampstead Heath's 791 acres has over 20 ponds - including some for swimming (quaintly, there are *single sex* ponds and a mixed bathing pond - some are also for fishing. It is the largest area of semi-wilderness in London and a great place for riding, walking, jogging, and picnicing - weather permitting! There are magnificent views to be had of central London - especially on a clear day (see pic with the Gherkin and St Pauls - not a very clear day unfortunately but still worth the walk!). There is a children's play area, plus the 18th Century Kenwood House and formal garden - with free entry - (see Things to Do Tip). When I was very young my Dad would bring me to Hampstead Heath. It was a place where he would cycle and play all day as a boy in the 1930s and 40's and he wanted his own children to know and love it too. Check the website for more information. From Central London, take the Northern Line North bound (Edgware branch) and get off at Hampstead. Turn left out of the station and left into Flask Walk, it becomes Well Walk and that is one of the entrances to the Heath.

If you start at the corner of Parliament Square nearest to Big Ben, and then walk along the front of the Houses of Parliament. If you keep walking for a couple of minutes (the Houses of Paliament are pretty big!), you'll come across a statue of King Richard I. King Richard I was also known as King Richard the Lionheart as he seemed to like nothing better than heading off into battle, especially if it involved helping the Christians defend the Holy Land. He got his nickname as apparently he was outstandingly brave in battle. If you believe the legends, he was also good friends with Robin Hood, who had had trouble with John (Richards brother) whilst Richard was away from the country fighting his battles. This statue shows Richard in his battle gear ready to go out and fight.

    St. Katharine's Dock
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was amazing. Apart from a few new items like a restaurant it was like walking back in time. The wonderful old cargo boats, the bond warehouses. I was entranced, and not for the first time, in London. St Katharine Docks has been the focus of worldwide trade and commerce for over 1,000 years. It is one of London's undiscovered treasures, an attractive waterside environment with a mixture of shops, restaurants, offices and luxury apartments as well as yachts and motorboats which come each year to use the berthing facilities at this, London's premier marina. Curious visitors to this historic site will also find the famous Dickens Inn, the oldest building at St Katharine Docks and on the River Thames. St Katharine's is located in the Pool of London and is an active member of the Pool of London Partnership (www.pooloflondon.co.uk), an organisation which has been set up to promote and develop the area as a high quality tourist destination in order to provide employment opportunities for local residents and growth potential for local firms.

    Resist the temptation....
  • Tip Rating:
  • to "log on" when you are away!! (unless you absolutely have to of course!).. it helps if you find your fave little cybercafe is actually closed.... This one is just round the corner from the Trocadero in Rupert Street off Leicester Square...it's the usual £1-2 an hour but it can't call itself a cafe 'cos it didn't have coffee, it just sold snacks and cold drinks.

  • The Museum is housed in the magnificent vaulted undercroft beneath the former monks' dormitory. This is one of the oldest areas of the Abbey, dating back almost to the foundation of the Norman church by King Edward the Confessor in 1065. The Museum is open daily from 10.30 to 16.00 but may be closed for State and other special events. An illustrated catalogue of the Funeral Effigies and some postcards and books are available at the Museum.

    Language
  • Tip Rating:
  • As London is a city of huge mix of everything, the language has many different accents, as well. English people use lots of slang, sometimes no endings or missed words. That's daily English language. European or American English sounds much better to my ears than British English.

A small, but interesting museum with changing exhibitions and one of the finest collections of ceremonial art in the world. We were lucky to come across a very extensive Disraeli exhibition. There is also a magnificent synagogue ark from 17th century Venice. Another branch exists in Finchley - it tells the story of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. The Camden location is 129-131 Albert St. in Camden Town - London NW1

    Headcorn - in Kent!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Further into Kent and another interesting name for yet another interesting village! This is about a 2 hour drive from London by car, shorter by train. It is very close to Biddenden, and we ventured here in search of a cream tea, when the recommended tea place in Biddenden proved to be closed! But we were glad we came here as the tea was superb, as was the scone (have a look at my restaurant tip re it!). Headcorn has a rather interesting history! It started out as a 'den' or clearing of land, where pigs lived. Later on, this land was given to the Maison Dieu at Ospringe, near Faversham the King Henry III. From then on, a weekly market started and the village grew from there. Under King Edward III the weaving industry flourished in this village, and Headcorn's prosperity can be attributed to this era. It is by no means a large town, but it is small and bustling, with a life of its own. Plus the tea and scones are divine! (This tip appears in Kent too, so pls do not rate it if you have rated the Kent one already. Thanks).
