Bring your camera! Wheelie backpacks are catching on in a big way.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must. There is precious little grass to rest your feet on! It will rain at some point, but I find umbrellas bulky, flimsy and too easy to forget somewhere. A rainslicker leaves both your hands free.
You can get everything here once you arrive, though it may be a lot more expensive.
I'm becoming a convert to digital. It's great to see your picture right after taking it, to be able to delete it to save room and to upload it faster to a website. So long to rolls of film and negatives! A cheap disposable camera might be good for people shots, you can hand it to a stranger to take a group photo without worrying it will get stolen. For the heavy stuff, I like to take a backpack. It's convenient, flexible, and backpackers are usually considered too cheap to be robbed of their equipment :-). For city excursions, I take a daypack. Daypacks are very comfortable even with heavy equipment like cameras, water bottles (yes! water is essential in a city too, not just in the desert!), city guide, maps, and all the knicknacks and touristy nonsense you pick up on your way... beware of spilling bottles and juicy fruit!
Bring comfortable shoes. Even if you do take the tube, as suggested in my 'Transportation' tip, you're going to walk a lot. Blisters might be something to write home about, but not on your first day.
I'm not very particular about these things, but here's one suggestion: The London air isn't very clean and can be rough on your skin, so you should bring some daycream (suncream will do, too). And wash your face after a day of exploring, because the skin gets really dirty and grimy - yuck!!
I guess this isn't particularly about London, but so what: Bring along some souvenirs for the natives. Really! Don't take glass beads, though :-). I like to pack Swiss chocolate (ideally with a wrapping that shows Swiss mountains etc.), and a couple small things like cheap knives, etc, again with a Swiss flag or some mountains on it. It's not much, but your host or acquaintances will appreciate the thought. I know I do. Leave a Comment

I carried a roll of duct tape in my suitcase, which came in very handy when one of the zippers broke.
Because of the cold weather, I was almost always bundled under layers of clothing and a heavy coat. For our daily outdoor excursions, I ended up switching between a couple heavy sweaters , changing the tops I wore underneath. In very short order I realized that I'd overpacked. I wish I'd realized how few items of heavy clothing I'd need.
I panicked when the battery for my digital camera ran down, but was able to find another with a bit of searching. I've since learned to take an extra battery and memory card whenever I travel.

I've been to London in winter and summer. You can find lots of showers during both. And there's the foggy side of London.... specially during winter. Be prepared for fast changes.
