The smaller, the better. Hotel rooms can be cozy at best and you can end up tripping all over a lot of luggage.
Good walking shoes and socks, a light, waterproof coat or jacket, a small backpack and an umbrella. Dress in layers - the temperature can vary during the day. Throw the jacket in the backpack if it warms up.
An electrical converter (if you bring a hair dryer, electric razor or digital camera). We like to carry a small travel pack of premoistened towellettes - good for cleaning up hands and wiping your face when it's hot. It even does duty as toilet paper in places where there either isn't any or it's really awful stuff.
Film was expensive - throw in a little more than you think you'll need.
Keep a small bag in your backpack or purse for any garbage you might end up with. Due to the the possibility of terrorism (namely explosives) you won't find trash cans anywhere near the most historical sites. In fact, even the gift shops couldn't accept any waste. As with most large cities, trash in London is a problem so make like good campers do and pack out what you can't dispose of at the moment. Bring a small highlighter - they come in handy for marking maps and highlighting guide books. We bought a plastic, accordian-fold legal letter-sized pouch with sections to store our passports, plane tickets, tube passes. extra cash, and photo-copies of our credit cards and passport IDs in. This kept all the important stuff in one place and was easy to toss into a hotel safe until we needed it. Leave a Comment

We had our backpacks from our mainland part of the trip but since we got a hire car in the UK we ended up buying an extra bag to put our extra clothes in (we got too cold in the UK so we needed warmer clothes).
Take warm clothes, especially if you're going in the cooler months. :) A rain jacket and umbrella are also very useful... And good walking shoes are a must too!!!
Take a lot of film or memory cards for the many photos you will take...everything seems expensive in the UK compared to Australia... Leave a Comment

Good walking shoes. Every time I visit the city I come back with aching legs but at least some comfortable shoes means that the feet themselves survive!
Remember your camera. If you buy disposable cameras at tourist attractions they are very expensive. Leave a Comment

My tip: 'Luggage with Wheels', is the only way to go and a back-pack.! Heathrow airport is one of the busiest airport in London.
Pack lite" as I over packed and just didn't need all the clothes. we went in December 2003 for 3 weeks and the weather just doesn't get as cold and it does in Ontario, Canada. It is frosty but pretty mild, we never needed winter boots. And their grass stays GREEN through the winter. Oh ya, if you ever need anything, check out the Charity Shops, much like our Value Village stores. Everything in the charity shops are British items so check the labels out and get a great deal! I did!!!
They have all that you need over there. Just think about an adaptor if you are looking to curl or straighten your hair. Most hotels, carry hairdryers, not sure about B&B's.
Bring extra batteries and films...lots to take, I used 7 rolls of film in 3 weeks. If digital, bring an extra memory card!! Leave a Comment

As little as you can get away with
Something for every occasion - definitely wet weather gear and something warm. Layers are best, the weather is changeable. Remember that it is a city in which you can buy what you need and that is open 7 days a week. Don't lumber yourself down.
None other than any particular favourites.
Good camera with decent zoom! Leave a Comment

I over packed and my poor husband almost had a hernia carrying my luggage. Bring warm clothing. I found it very cool even in the summer. Pack a jacket and sweaters and long pants. Casual clothing is good for most of the time. I found I was a bit overdressed on a lot of occasions. Of course I never had tea with the Queen and she was not even home when I visited the Palace.
Bring rain gear, sneakers or walking shoes and warm clothing. Layered works best.
Don't bring the whole bathroom like I did. You never use half the stuff you think you need.
Bring camera, it is a must with lots of film.
You will be surprised on how little you can get by with. I always over pack. Leave a Comment

You will walk a lot so take good shoes with you, if not, you can also buy good ones in London, and even if you think that you are going to use the underground, you will still walk a lot as in many places you walk a lot just to get in and out of the tube. Rain jacket is a must.
There is not much to photograph here, it will probably be rainy anyway :-) Leave a Comment

Bring whatever you like, but remember you have to carry it :-) Porters are a thing of the past, and Taxi drivers will only help you get luggage out of the taxi.
Best advice bring the most comfortable shoes you have, you will be doing a lot of walking . London is normaly cold in winter, warm in summer,so dress accordingly, but always, always have an umbrella, it has been known to rain on just one side of the street here and be sunny on the other.
You can buy everything you need in the UK , but make sure you have enough prescription drugs with you to last, if you do not belong to the EU the Medical costs are high and a lot of meds can't be bought over the counter, if you are not sure go to http://www.wellbeing.com/atp/index.jsp they have a lot of info there.
The UK can deal with any of your Photographic needs it may be a little more expensive than the US and Canada though. Most chemists will supply batteries and shopsd like Dixons, Currey's, PCWorld will hold other photographic accessories.
There are a few campsite on the outskirts of London, but you wont really need bug spray in London.
Just bring lots of money, London is expensive, but there is a lot you can do for free, as you can see the URL at the top of the page. Leave a Comment
