Pizzeria Rustica: Pizzeria Rustica - in Richmond, Southwest London
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Pizzeria Rustica is a small pizza restaurant located on the main drag in Richmond, close to the station. I have walked past it numerous times and was always intrigued by a sign out the front claiming that they won 'Best Pizza in London' a couple of years back. So one day Alex and I popped in for lunch to see how good the pizza really. This is a real 'Italian feeling' place, with all Italian staff who spoke to us in a mixture of Italian and English. They were very friendly and smiley, singing along to the 80's music that was playing.

The restaurant has seating over a couple of levels. We sat in the small area at the back on the ground floor, right by the kitchen. There is a good range of starters and antipasti type treats on the menu, along with salads and pastas - but we went straight to the pizza. There were 14 different types of stone-baked pizza's to choose from. I opted for the Bella Italia, with Mozzarella, fresh tomato, rocket & parma ham, and I had some artichoke added. Alex had the Capricciosa, with Mozzarella, tomato, ham, egg, mushrooms, artichokes, pepperoni & olives. Both of the pizzas were really tasty, and pretty big! I think next time we will have some antipasti to start and then share a pizza. For the two pizza's and a couple of drinks the bill came to 23 pounds.

Potemkin - Russian Restaurant & Bar: Russian Restaurant & Bar, East London
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Potemkin is a Russian restaurant & bar located in inner-east London. It claims it is home to a "new definition of what Russian cuisine truly is". There is a small bar at street level, and a smallish restaurant downstairs - the stairs are quite narrow and steep, so not the best place if you are stair-challenged! As with any Russian restaurant, there was a huge range of vodka's on offer. Unfortunately the one that I wanted to try was not available, though the one I ended up sampling was nice and potent. The restaurant is colourfully decorated and has comfortable high-backed chairs and a relaxed feel. Service wasn't to good, though they were friendly enough. We had a drink in the bar first while waiting for our friends to arrive, then went downstairs together to the restaurant. It got a bit noisy due to a large group drinking lots of vodka, but at least it is a non-smoking venue.

To start we all shared some Buzhenina (spiced roast pork, served sliced with purple horseradish). For main course Alex & I both had the Quail, Jane had the Pork Sashlyk, and Geoff had the Perets Farshirovany (baked pepper) and also helped me eat some of the Quail. The food was quite good, but too garlicky for me. For dessert, Alex & I shared the Blinchik Tvorogom (pancake filled with sweet curd cheese), Geoff had the Blinchik Vishnya (pancake filled with cherries) and Jane had the Chocolate Truffle. We also sampled a couple of flavoured vodka's with our desserts. Budem zdorovy!

Pret-a-Portea, at the Berkeley Hotel: Pret-a-Portea - afternoon tea with a difference
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • My sister was visiting us from Sydney so a fancy afternoon tea was in order. We wanted something different - none of those traditional sandwiches and scones - so we headed to the Caramel Room at the Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge to sample their 'Pret-a-Portea'. From the website: "Pret-a-Portea is a new concept in afternoon tea. It has been designed to add a creative twist to the classic elements of the traditional English afternoon tea, with the cakes and pastries inspired by the latest fashion season's catwalk designs for the style conscious and with savouries in miniature mouthfuls for the figure conscious."

It was a pretty special indulgence. Instead of the usual finger-sandwiches, the savoury treats were très gourmet - things like lightly-seared tuna, goats cheese balls, salmon sashimi, mixed seafood, artichoke & asparagus and so on, all really tasty. The sweet treats looked amazing and for the most part tasted just as good. They were all created based on the latest catwalk looks - from boots to handbags to coats. Check out my photo of the menu for full descriptions of all the cakes. My favourite was the Alexander McQueen Stuart tartan chocolate cake. They kept replenishing the food - bringing out the savoury and sweet plates at least three times each, which gave us all the chance to try the same things, so no need to squabble over the Valentino leopard chestnut crème handbag or the Yves Saint Laurent frilly passion fruit meringue! And no need for dinner that night either.

Alex's 30th birthday was indeed a cause for celebration, so I organised a surprise dinner at Rhodes 24, which is a classy restaurant, with fabulous views. Rhodes 24 is located on the 24th floor of Tower 42, the tallest building in the 'City of London', and is one of celebrity chef Gary Rhodes restaurants. The décor is modern and stylish and the views from the bar and restaurant are superb. Service was first class and the food was delicious. We started with a drink at the bar - they have some great cocktails on offer - and enjoyed the view of the nearby 'Gherkin' building, amongst others.

In the restaurant we were seated by the window, and so were able to check out the view throughout the meal. We enjoyed a tasty Amuse-bouche of Cauliflower soup whilst we perused the menu. To start, Alex and Nik both had the Glazed lobster risotto thermidor, which was very rich but yum. I had the Asparagus, served 3 ways, which was also excellent, and Tandor had the Cumberland sausage with warm pickled cabbage. Main courses were fantastic as well. Tandor and Nik both ordered the Roast loin of Veal with truffle macaroni cheese which they loved. Alex & I had the Rack of lamb (for two) with mutton hash - the lamb was perfectly cooked and the mutton hash was very tasty. The lamb was carved and served up next to our table. We couldn't resist dessert - Nik, Tandor and I all had the delicious Pecan Pie with caramel pecan ice cream and Alex had the equally yum Warm chocolate pudding with kirsch cherries and black cherry ice cream. All that food, plus cocktails, a couple of bottles of wine and then dessert wine for the boys, made it a pretty pricy evening. But the experience was so good that it was worth every pound.

It is always exciting when a new restaurant opens in your area, and when it is owned by people who run a couple of other successful businesses in the vicinity there is a good chance it may be a winner - so we headed to Rock & Rose within two weeks of their opening. Rock & Rose use the words "Food. Passion. Glamour" to describe their shiny new restaurant and bar. The interior is alive with colour and a little bit of glamour - which makes a refreshing change from the usual bland décor offered by most modern restaurants. The velvet wallpaper was a big hit with our group, and the chandeliers and candles created a stylish atmosphere for a drink or a meal. Niggling complaints first - our table was too small for four people, it was a bit drafty, and a couple of the dishes we chose were disappointing. Those issues aside, we had a great night at Rock & Rose, and ended up being there for almost 5 hours, with no pressure at all to vacate our table. Service was very professional yet cheeky, in a good way.

To start, we had the Ham Hock Terrine with homemade piccalilli, the Moules Mariniere, the Goat's cheese, roast cherry tomato & basil tart, and the Rock & Rose prawn & avocado salad. No complaints apart from the lack of prawns in the salad (there was only two). The boys had the Ultimate Surf & Turf for main course - Scottish Sirloin and Giant Prawns, while the ladies opted for the Rump of Lamb with dauphinoise potato, and the Scottish Salmon fillet with grilled scallops and saffron risotto. The lamb and the sirloins were good, the salmon & scallops were overcooked and flavourless. We pushed on to dessert - trying the Chocolate & Stem Ginger brownie, and the Apple Crumble. The crumble was reportedly delicious and the brownie was very tasty and I wished I wasn't sharing it. The quirky décor and the interesting menu will see us returning to Rock & Rose. Shame about the name though.

Seaport: Seaport - seafood near Marble Arch
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • A friend told me about a new seafood restaurant that had opened just near her house in Marble Arch - apparently it served up the best seafood she has had in London to date. Well, how could we not go and check it out then! Seaport is its name, and it is located on lovely Seymour Place, just a few minutes walk from Marble Arch tube. It has a real 'local' feel about it, and serves up French style seafood dishes in a relaxed environment. The décor is nothing special, and made me feel like I was in a small town in France. The section we sat in doubled as a fishmonger, and it was reassuring to see the display of lovely fresh seafood. Service was a bit hit-and-miss, though friendly enough. The main waiter was very 'old-school', presenting us with the wine list and then only giving us the food menu once the wine had been ordered (which normally would have really annoyed me, but seeing as there was only seafood on the menu we knew we would be safe ordering white wine).

To start we shared the Smoked Salmon with crab meat, avocado and salad. It was good, but there was too much onion mixed with the crab for my taste. For main meal we both had La Croute du Pecheur, which was Prawns, crab, scallop, and halibut baked in light puff-pastry with lobster sauce. This was pretty tasty, though the lobster sauce was very rich. We were way too full for dessert. Seaport serves up honest food at good prices. It didn't 'wow' me enough to warrant a return visit, though can understand why my friend keeps going back - I probably would too if it was just across the road from my house.

Shampers: Shampers - Bistro/Wine Bar near Oxford Circus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • After a few hours of shopping on Oxford Street, it was cold and dark and we needed a drink and some nourishment. The problem was it was Friday night and we hadn't made a reservation. Would we find a table at somewhere other than a chain restaurant? Thankfully we did, and Shampers was that place. I had read the great reviews about Shampers on TrustedPlaces and added it to my mental list of places to try next time I needed a meal in WeHo (as my friend ramanauskas calls it!). Shampers is a lively, cosy bistro and wine bar, with a big wine list, and a good value menu with plenty of daily specials. Rocking up just after 7pm, we were very happy to be given a prime table, though advised that we would have to vacate it by 9pm. The room was buzzing with after-workers unwinding after a hectic week. It was noisy, but the right kind of noisy. We wasted no time in ordering. A basket of tasty baguette appeared not long after, and although our first wine choice was unavailable, the waiter suggested a similar one which was excellent (and cheaper).

To start we shared the Grilled goats cheese with bacon and salad. Mmmm.....I do love goats cheese! Main course was the Roast Grouse with vegetables for me, and the Grilled Quail with meat balls for Alex. Talk about value for money - the serves were big, and the prices much less than the norm for these types of dishes. Oh, and they tasted very good too. Fiddly to eat though. Dessert was a disappointment - we shared the Bread & Butter Pudding which was incredibly bland. Thankfully I had saved a mouthful of that delicious wine to wash it down with.

Sherlock's Bar & Grill: Sherlock's Bar & Grill, Baker Street Hotel Dining
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Sherlock's Bar & Grill is located on Baker Street, and is part of the Park Plaza Sherlock Holmes Hotel. You enter the restaurant via the bar area. The bar is a nice place for a drink as they sometimes have live music. Be warned though - drinks are expensive here - you will get the same drink a little cheaper if you order it in the restaurant. I had dinner at Sherlock's one evening with a friend. To be honest, I wasn't expecting too much from the place so was pleasantly surprised by the sophisticated décor and friendly service. It was fairly quiet though which affected the atmosphere a bit.

A couple of the starters did sound tempting, but we both have a sweet tooth so didn't want to fill up too early. Main course for me was the Poached Scottish salmon fillet, with wilted spinach, asparagus and beurre blanc sauce. The ingredients were good quality, but the whole dish was just too bland - I had to add salt and I NEVER add salt to anything. My friend had the Sage and lemon veal piccata, with aubergine caviar, white asparagus and grain mustard sauce. This was nicely presented and appeared to be tasty. Desserts sampled were the Pineapple and mango tatin with coconut ice cream, and the White and dark chocolate mousse with vanilla ice cream. Both looked great but weren't worth returning for. Overall, it is a nice looking place and the food was ok, but nothing special enough IMHO for a return visit.

Sugar Reef Bar & Restaurant: Sugar Reef Bar & Restaurant - off Piccadilly
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One evening Alex and I were going to see the musical 'Cabaret', and needed somewhere for a quick dinner beforehand, close to the theatre. We chose Sugar Reef as its menu sounded good and pretty cheap too. Sugar Reef is located just off Piccadilly Circus, and has a large restaurant and separate bar. It has Happy Hour each day and special offer dining throughout the week. Our booking was for 6pm and I was pleasantly surprised to find the restaurant already pretty busy - and relieved as it really added to the atmosphere of the place. Service was friendly enough and efficient, allowing us to have 2 courses in less than 90mins which was perfect for our pre-theatre meal.

We didn't have time for starters, so went straight to the main meal. I had the Sticky Chilli Lamb Rump with sweet potato wedges, coriander yoghurt and Alex had the Rib Eye Steak with a Béarnaise sauce, chunky chips and a petite salad. The lamb rump was actually really tasty, as were the sweet potato wedges. For dessert Alex had the Deep Dish Apple Pie and I had the Gooey Chocolate Souffle Tart - as decadent as it sounds!

Tangawizi: Tangawizi - Indian restaurant near Richmond
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Tangawizi is a small Indian restaurant located in East Twickenham, just over the bridge from Richmond. As a rule I don't eat Indian food - not that I don't like it, but because is doesn't agree with my delicate constitution. However, after reading a rave review by a professional reviewer that I have met (who said it is one of the best Indian restaurants in London at the moment) I decided to give it a try. Oh, and did I mention that living only a ten minute walk away made it too hard to resist. Set in a small, narrow restaurant, Tangawizi is kind of dark and very purple. We were given a table at the front of the restaurant, so we "wouldn't be disturbed by the large group" at the rear. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful - can't remember the last time I had such lovely service. We felt so welcome....ok, I know that is not as important as the food, but it helps to make the meal an even more enjoyable experience.

To start, we enjoyed the complimentary papadams, which we dipped in a sweet mango chutney. Then we moved onto the Tangawizi aaron platter - which included a selection of tasty treats such as chicken tikka, juicy lamb chops, tiger prawns, paneer tikka, seekh kebab and chowk ki tikki. We then shared a Koli curry (mild chicken and coconut curry) with some basmati rice, and side dishes of Saag paneer (soft cottage cheese with spinach) and Dal makhani (urad dal and red kidney beans cooked with cumin seeds). And of course some Naan bread to help mop up that delicious coconuty sauce. I loved every dish we had, though the Dal makhani was particularly special. Serving sizes were generous and we had ordered way too much - no problem, the wonderful staff just packaged up the left-overs for us to take home.
