Located in quaint little Kew Village is the Kew Greenhouse Café. The café is open 7 days serving up light meals and old-fashioned creamed teas, along with a range of decadent looking cakes. The cafe is a convenient place to visit on your way to/from Kew Gardens. It is a leafy looking place, with a friendly feel and a nice conservatory area at the back which is non-smoking. Find yourself a table and check out the menu. Once you have decided, go and order at the counter. Your food/drinks will then be delivered to your table, and when you have finished you just pay your bill at the counter on your way out. Having eyed out the café many times, I finally ventured there one wet and windy afternoon to meet a friend for coffee and a gossip. We found a nice table in the conservatory section and perused the cake options.
In the end we both had a coffee, I had some chocolate cake and Laura had the Bakewell tart. My cake was ok, though Laura was a little disappointed in hers - it was nowhere near as good as her mum makes. The coffee was ok, but the milk had been overheated affecting the flavour and causing me to burn my tongue! The Kew Greenhouse Café has a good feeling about it though and I will definitely return again one day for another piece of cake and more of that excellent gossip ; ) Leave a Comment Theme: CoffeehousePrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 1 Station Parade, Kew TW9 3PSPhone: 020 8940 0183Directions: Nearest Tube/Train: Kew Gardens station is 1 minute walk

 | | | | The King's Arms: The King's Arms - Gastro Pub near London Bridge | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
VT member HORSCHECK was visiting London from Germany, so a small meeting was arranged in his honour. The meeting started at a gastro pub called The King's Arms where we had lunch. The pub is located about a 10 minute walk from London Bridge, quite close to Tower Bridge. The King's Arms is a great looking place. The interior looks very comfortable with a mix of old leather sofas and mix-matched tables and chairs. A great place for lunch on a winters day. Service was a bit slow, they appeared to be short staffed, though we weren't in that much of a hurry so it didn't matter. Our VT group sat at a table along the left-hand wall. The seats were great....until the rugby came on and suddenly the game was blasted out from a speaker pointing right at our table! Oh well, the game only went for an hour or so.
The food was really tasty - everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. I had the Roast Duck Breast with roast sweet potato, beans and red wine jus - it was delicious! Others had the Mushroom Risotto, the Venison Steak and the Sausages & Mash. We were a little disappointed that the desserts on the menu were not available....I was really craving that Chocolate pudding....oh well, had to have another drink instead ; ) Leave a Comment Theme: Pub/BreweryPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 251 Tooley St, Bermondsey, London, SE1 2JXPhone: 020 7407 3207Directions: Nearest Tube/Train: London Bridge station is about 10 minutes walk Bus: The number 47 bus stops just nearbyWebsite: http://www.hostmoreleisure.com/kingsarms/index.html Other Contact: info@kingsarmsse1.com

 | | | | The Roebuck: The Roebuck - Gastro Pub in Richmond | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
One mild autumn Sunday after a walk by the river in Richmond, Alex and I stopped by The Roebuck for lunch. Located on Richmond Hill, The Roebuck is a traditional pub which has recently been renovated and can now be labelled as a Gastro Pub, meaning that it serves food better than traditional pub grub. The Roebuck has a lovely homely feel, with separate nooks for a romantic rendezvous, perfect on a cold winters day. When the weather is fine you can take your pint outside, cross the road and have a drink while enjoy the lovely view over the river. The upstairs is smoke free, so this is where we headed. Service was very friendly and I really liked the atmosphere.
It was a Sunday, so we both decided to have the Sunday Roast - Beef with vegies and Yorkshire Pudding. To be honest, the food was a bit disappointing. However, we are keen to return one evening and try something else from the usual (non-Sunday) menu, as it sounds good. | | | | The Telegraph - A country pub in London: The Telegraph - Putney Heath | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Having read some rave reviews about The Telegraph I was very keen to check it out for myself as it is not too far to drive there from my place. I was intrigued by this "Country pub in London", as it sounded like the perfect place for a relaxing Sunday lunch. Well, last Sunday dawned sunny, so we were off to The Telegraph. We headed there early to ensure we got a seat out in the garden. We really loved the location - it is tucked away in the middle of Putney Heath and you really do feel like you are in the country. There was plenty of parking nearby, and you can also catch a bus there from Putney (Mon-Sat). The front garden is filled with picnic tables, while the beautifully restored interior is filled with comfy leather lounges and mix-matched chairs and tables.
We nabbed the perfect table in the garden and I popped inside to order our drinks and lunch at the bar. The staff were very friendly though a little disorganised. We both opted for the Sunday Roast - me the beef and he the lamb. Our meals were delivered incredibly fast....a little to fast as we barely had a chance to sip our pre-food beer. The quality of the food was fine, though there was way too much garlic on the potatoes. Deciding it would be wrong not to try desserts, we ordered the Lemon Meringue and the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Both were disappointing - the Lemon Meringue wasn't tangy enough, and the Pudding was too dry and there was nowhere near enough sauce. But we loved the setting and look of The Telegraph so will definitely return again. It is a great place to meet up with friends for a weekend lunch and is child and dog friendly too. | | | | The White Swan: The White Swan - near Chancery Lane | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
My usual dining companion (aka AM) recently started working in a new part of town, and came home one evening raving about a bar called the White Swan just up the road from his office. Apparently it had a great sounding restaurant too. Ok, I was sold, and a table was booked for dinner the following week. Meeting AM at the office we wandered up to the White Swan for a drink before our meal. I immediately liked this modern pub, with its welcoming bar area, complete with a massive mirror and a good variety of mounted animal heads. There is a small mezzanine level over the bar, offering additional seating, while the restaurant is up on the first floor. I was equally impressed with the restaurant. The room is stylishly decorated, with wood and caramel tones, attractive (but not so comfortable) chairs and although there are plenty of windows it still had a very warm feel about it, which was perfect on the cold, wet evening we visited. Oh, and it has a mirrored ceiling too. Service was very friendly and professional, yet relaxed, which was perfect for the environment. There is an impressive wine list, with a great range of wines from around the world and a good selection by the glass as well.
To start, AM had the Braised oxtail with parsnip puree and roast garlic, and I had a couple of tastes. Loved the presentation and the comforting flavours. Main course was excellent - we both ordered the Roast breast of pheasant with boudin noir, creamed bacon and savoy cabbage, chestnuts, fondant potato, caramelised apples and Calvados jus. It sounds a bit much doesn't it, but it was superb. All of the facets of the dish came together deliciously - I even enjoyed the Boudin noir, which is blood sausage. Dessert was less successful. We ordered the Steamed chocolate pudding with vanilla bean ice cream, and the Plum tarte tatin. The choc pudding was nothing special, and the tarte tatin was unfortunately undercooked - the pastry was half raw. We had been warned that it would take at least 15 minutes to prepare, so I was a bit surprised when our desserts arrived sooner than that. Our waitress was devastated when she saw the half eaten tarte tatin and immediately knew what the problem was. She apologised and didn't charge us for it, nor one of the glasses of wine - though that may have just been an error! Loved the White Swan. | | | | Tom Ilic: Tom Ilic - in Battersea | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Tom Ilic had been on the To-Do list for a while, but after reading a friends rave review, it was accelerated to the top of the list, and a table was promptly booked. Dining at 7pm, we were first in on a Friday night, but by 8.30pm the restaurant was full. Wasn't too impressed with the décor - the carpet in the section we sat in looked like it needed a good clean. And what was with those unattractive blow heaters. After about 10 minutes we asked to change tables - a dimmer switch on the wall next to Alex's head was making an annoyingly loud buzzing noise. Apparently we weren't the first people to complain about this. The table we moved to had a flickering light above it, but after an adjustment via the aforementioned dimmer switch the problem was solved. Our waitress was very friendly, but a tad ditzy. We dined on a special deal - 3 courses plus a glass of bubbly for £23. This turned out to be excellent value based on the quality of the food we devoured. The bubbly went down well, as did a very tasty bottle of 2002 Benito Urbina Crianza Rioja.
To start, we had the Braised pig's cheeks & chorizo with garlic & parsley mash, and the Tomato & pesto terrine with goats cheese croquettes. The pig's cheeks were juicy and perfectly accompanied by the not-too-spicy chorizo. The terrine was a disappointment - basically a slab of raw tomato with pesto at one end. Thankfully the goats cheese croquettes added some flavour. Main course was the Roast saddle & braised neck of lamb with potato & turnip gratin, and spiced aubergine, and also the Seared scallops, honey roast pork belly, Jerusalem artichokes & hazelnuts. These were both winners. I wasn't so sure about the scallops and pork belly at first, but when you tried a mouthful of all the components together you were wowed by the flavours and the nutty finish. Desserts we indulged in were the Pear tart tatin with cinnamon ice cream, and the Dark chocolate fondant with white chocolate & truffle ice cream. The pear tart looked and tasted superb, and the fondant was one of the better ones I have had of late, though it was so rich I couldn't finish it.
