The Kew Greenhouse Café: Kew Greenhouse Café, Kew in West London
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Located in quaint little Kew Village is the Kew Greenhouse Café. The café is open 7 days serving up light meals and old-fashioned creamed teas, along with a range of decadent looking cakes. The cafe is a convenient place to visit on your way to/from Kew Gardens. It is a leafy looking place, with a friendly feel and a nice conservatory area at the back which is non-smoking. Find yourself a table and check out the menu. Once you have decided, go and order at the counter. Your food/drinks will then be delivered to your table, and when you have finished you just pay your bill at the counter on your way out. Having eyed out the café many times, I finally ventured there one wet and windy afternoon to meet a friend for coffee and a gossip. We found a nice table in the conservatory section and perused the cake options.

In the end we both had a coffee, I had some chocolate cake and Laura had the Bakewell tart. My cake was ok, though Laura was a little disappointed in hers - it was nowhere near as good as her mum makes. The coffee was ok, but the milk had been overheated affecting the flavour and causing me to burn my tongue! The Kew Greenhouse Café has a good feeling about it though and I will definitely return again one day for another piece of cake and more of that excellent gossip ; )

The King's Arms: The King's Arms - Gastro Pub near London Bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • VT member HORSCHECK was visiting London from Germany, so a small meeting was arranged in his honour. The meeting started at a gastro pub called The King's Arms where we had lunch. The pub is located about a 10 minute walk from London Bridge, quite close to Tower Bridge. The King's Arms is a great looking place. The interior looks very comfortable with a mix of old leather sofas and mix-matched tables and chairs. A great place for lunch on a winters day. Service was a bit slow, they appeared to be short staffed, though we weren't in that much of a hurry so it didn't matter. Our VT group sat at a table along the left-hand wall. The seats were great....until the rugby came on and suddenly the game was blasted out from a speaker pointing right at our table! Oh well, the game only went for an hour or so.

The food was really tasty - everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. I had the Roast Duck Breast with roast sweet potato, beans and red wine jus - it was delicious! Others had the Mushroom Risotto, the Venison Steak and the Sausages & Mash. We were a little disappointed that the desserts on the menu were not available....I was really craving that Chocolate pudding....oh well, had to have another drink instead ; )

My husband knows I always get a little down when my birthday comes around, so to cheer me up we went to The Ledbury for dinner. The Ledbury is a classy restaurant located in Notting Hill. It serves up modern European cuisine and currently holds 1 Michelin star, making it one of the best renowned restaurants in the area. The dining room is stylish but relaxed. Tables are not too close together making this the perfect place for a romantic meal. Service was first class, though at the same time making us feel very welcome and relaxed. The sommelier was most helpful in assisting us with our wine choice and her recommendations proved to be excellent.

The food was amazing. We opted for the 8 course tasting menu. While we were waiting we were given a little treat of Foie Gras mousse on a thin cracker. It was a good indication of things to come. The brief descriptions of courses follows (full descriptions on menu photo - see additional photos): Amuse - mushroom style soup with a deep fried crab stick Loin of Tuna - my favourite course Salad of Organic Vegetables - more delicious than it sounds Terrine of foie gras - this was sooooo rich! It was Alex's favourite course Roast Halibut Roast Duck Vanilla & Yoghurt Pannacotta Fig Soufflé - this was a full size soufflé....I couldn't fit it all in! Check out the photos for a pic of all the courses. It was as amazing as it sounds. We will definitely go back again one day.

The Original Maids of Honour: Traditional Afternoon Tea in Kew, West London
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you are looking for an authentic British afternoon tea after a visit to Kew Gardens, pop across the road to The Original Maids of Honour. This quaint tea room is the perfect place to relax and soak up the traditional atmosphere. The Original Maids of Honour has been operating in the area for nearly 300 years. It is home to the delicious Maid of Honour cake - which is kind of like a light custard tart, but the recipe is a family secret that has been passed down through the generations.

The café is open for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. At lunch time you can choose from a selection of home made pies and sausage rolls, quiches, sandwiches or the Roast of the Day. Stop by in the afternoon for the Maids of Honour set tea, which includes tea (or coffee), 2 scones with jam and clotted cream and a Maid of Honour cake. Delicious!! There are also a selection of freshly made cakes and pastries that you can eat in or take away. Opening Hours Monday 9.30 am - 1.00 pm Tuesday - Saturday 9.30 am - 6.00 pm Morning Coffee 9.30 am - 12 noon Luncheon Sittings 12.30 pm & 1.30 pm Afternoon Tea 2.30 pm - 5.30 pm

The Roebuck: The Roebuck - Gastro Pub in Richmond
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One mild autumn Sunday after a walk by the river in Richmond, Alex and I stopped by The Roebuck for lunch. Located on Richmond Hill, The Roebuck is a traditional pub which has recently been renovated and can now be labelled as a Gastro Pub, meaning that it serves food better than traditional pub grub. The Roebuck has a lovely homely feel, with separate nooks for a romantic rendezvous, perfect on a cold winters day. When the weather is fine you can take your pint outside, cross the road and have a drink while enjoy the lovely view over the river. The upstairs is smoke free, so this is where we headed. Service was very friendly and I really liked the atmosphere.

It was a Sunday, so we both decided to have the Sunday Roast - Beef with vegies and Yorkshire Pudding. To be honest, the food was a bit disappointing. However, we are keen to return one evening and try something else from the usual (non-Sunday) menu, as it sounds good.

The Telegraph - A country pub in London: The Telegraph - Putney Heath
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Having read some rave reviews about The Telegraph I was very keen to check it out for myself as it is not too far to drive there from my place. I was intrigued by this "Country pub in London", as it sounded like the perfect place for a relaxing Sunday lunch. Well, last Sunday dawned sunny, so we were off to The Telegraph. We headed there early to ensure we got a seat out in the garden. We really loved the location - it is tucked away in the middle of Putney Heath and you really do feel like you are in the country. There was plenty of parking nearby, and you can also catch a bus there from Putney (Mon-Sat). The front garden is filled with picnic tables, while the beautifully restored interior is filled with comfy leather lounges and mix-matched chairs and tables.

We nabbed the perfect table in the garden and I popped inside to order our drinks and lunch at the bar. The staff were very friendly though a little disorganised. We both opted for the Sunday Roast - me the beef and he the lamb. Our meals were delivered incredibly fast....a little to fast as we barely had a chance to sip our pre-food beer. The quality of the food was fine, though there was way too much garlic on the potatoes. Deciding it would be wrong not to try desserts, we ordered the Lemon Meringue and the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Both were disappointing - the Lemon Meringue wasn't tangy enough, and the Pudding was too dry and there was nowhere near enough sauce. But we loved the setting and look of The Telegraph so will definitely return again. It is a great place to meet up with friends for a weekend lunch and is child and dog friendly too.

The Victoria: The Victoria - Gastropub near Richmond
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One sunny spring Sunday we headed to The Victoria for lunch. This lovely gastropub is hidden away in the back streets of East Sheen and was filled with family groups enjoying good quality food in nice surroundings. There is a small, comfy bar area at the front, and then dedicated dining areas to the side and rear. At the back of the pub there are some outside benches and a children's play area. We sat in the conservatory section to the rear of the pub. There were plenty of people eating when we arrived, and a few more large groups came along later. The menu is reasonably priced with a good variety of meals. We ordered a beer while we tried to decide what to eat. Service was a bit amateurish and slow, but very friendly.

To start, we shared the Roast pumpkin & ricotta gnocchi which was tasty. For main course I had the Fish & Chips and Alex had the Wild boar & apple sausages. Both meals were really nice and we were happy with our choices. Feeling a bit naughty we decided to share the Italian chocolate tart for dessert - it was well worth the extra calories!

The White Horse: The White Horse - Richmond Gastro Pub
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The White Horse is a stylish Gastro Pub located about 5 minutes walk from Richmond Station. It is a friendly, open-plan pub with a big non-smoking area. There is also outside seating at the rear, next to a large children's play area. It is located in a residential area, though not too far from the High Street making it still popular during the week for business lunches. It is also very popular for Sunday lunch - bookings are a must. Service is relaxed and friendly, the menu is varied and the food is good quality - not your average Pub Grub.

We popped into The White Horse for lunch on Christmas Eve 2006. We had booked the day before and managed to get the last available table in the non-smoking area. The pub had a really festive feel about it and there were big tables of families and friends getting into the Christmas spirit. We started with a beer whilst deciding what to eat. As a starter, Alex decided to have the Duck & pistachio pate in crust served with marinated mushrooms. I had a small taste and it was good - Alex enjoyed it and thought it was a generous sized serve. For main course Alex had the Goose magret with roast potatoes, French beans and a raspberry sauce and I have the 'Sunday Feast' which consisted of Roast beef and turkey with roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and several other vegetables. Both meals were delicious and really filling - we didn't have room for dessert :-/ I really like The White Horse and I am sure we will be back again one day.

The White Swan: The White Swan - near Chancery Lane
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • My usual dining companion (aka AM) recently started working in a new part of town, and came home one evening raving about a bar called the White Swan just up the road from his office. Apparently it had a great sounding restaurant too. Ok, I was sold, and a table was booked for dinner the following week. Meeting AM at the office we wandered up to the White Swan for a drink before our meal. I immediately liked this modern pub, with its welcoming bar area, complete with a massive mirror and a good variety of mounted animal heads. There is a small mezzanine level over the bar, offering additional seating, while the restaurant is up on the first floor. I was equally impressed with the restaurant. The room is stylishly decorated, with wood and caramel tones, attractive (but not so comfortable) chairs and although there are plenty of windows it still had a very warm feel about it, which was perfect on the cold, wet evening we visited. Oh, and it has a mirrored ceiling too. Service was very friendly and professional, yet relaxed, which was perfect for the environment. There is an impressive wine list, with a great range of wines from around the world and a good selection by the glass as well.

To start, AM had the Braised oxtail with parsnip puree and roast garlic, and I had a couple of tastes. Loved the presentation and the comforting flavours. Main course was excellent - we both ordered the Roast breast of pheasant with boudin noir, creamed bacon and savoy cabbage, chestnuts, fondant potato, caramelised apples and Calvados jus. It sounds a bit much doesn't it, but it was superb. All of the facets of the dish came together deliciously - I even enjoyed the Boudin noir, which is blood sausage. Dessert was less successful. We ordered the Steamed chocolate pudding with vanilla bean ice cream, and the Plum tarte tatin. The choc pudding was nothing special, and the tarte tatin was unfortunately undercooked - the pastry was half raw. We had been warned that it would take at least 15 minutes to prepare, so I was a bit surprised when our desserts arrived sooner than that. Our waitress was devastated when she saw the half eaten tarte tatin and immediately knew what the problem was. She apologised and didn't charge us for it, nor one of the glasses of wine - though that may have just been an error! Loved the White Swan.

Tom Ilic had been on the To-Do list for a while, but after reading a friends rave review, it was accelerated to the top of the list, and a table was promptly booked. Dining at 7pm, we were first in on a Friday night, but by 8.30pm the restaurant was full. Wasn't too impressed with the décor - the carpet in the section we sat in looked like it needed a good clean. And what was with those unattractive blow heaters. After about 10 minutes we asked to change tables - a dimmer switch on the wall next to Alex's head was making an annoyingly loud buzzing noise. Apparently we weren't the first people to complain about this. The table we moved to had a flickering light above it, but after an adjustment via the aforementioned dimmer switch the problem was solved. Our waitress was very friendly, but a tad ditzy. We dined on a special deal - 3 courses plus a glass of bubbly for £23. This turned out to be excellent value based on the quality of the food we devoured. The bubbly went down well, as did a very tasty bottle of 2002 Benito Urbina Crianza Rioja.

To start, we had the Braised pig's cheeks & chorizo with garlic & parsley mash, and the Tomato & pesto terrine with goats cheese croquettes. The pig's cheeks were juicy and perfectly accompanied by the not-too-spicy chorizo. The terrine was a disappointment - basically a slab of raw tomato with pesto at one end. Thankfully the goats cheese croquettes added some flavour. Main course was the Roast saddle & braised neck of lamb with potato & turnip gratin, and spiced aubergine, and also the Seared scallops, honey roast pork belly, Jerusalem artichokes & hazelnuts. These were both winners. I wasn't so sure about the scallops and pork belly at first, but when you tried a mouthful of all the components together you were wowed by the flavours and the nutty finish. Desserts we indulged in were the Pear tart tatin with cinnamon ice cream, and the Dark chocolate fondant with white chocolate & truffle ice cream. The pear tart looked and tasted superb, and the fondant was one of the better ones I have had of late, though it was so rich I couldn't finish it.
