Bar du Marche, Soho: French bar/eatery in Soho

    by kit_mc Written Feb 7, 2007

This joint in deepest Soho was recommended to me as having a decent steak and chips. In London the only restaurant trip more worthwhile than the Holy Grail of the best Hot and Sour Soup is a decent Steak and Pommes Frites!

The place as a whole really plays the French/theatre theme, with French owners and staff and theatre posters all over and an unhurried continental atmosphere. It kind of works actually… Everyone is really quite friendly and it has a certain 'local' feel, which in Soho can be a difficult thing to find. Certainly not soulless, this place does have personality.

Upstairs is more of a bar affair with smaller tables and I found it preferable to the slightly more cavern-like basement, where larger groups will be seated. Bookings aren’t essential though the restaurant does get busy in the evenings. Preferable for an evening meal and several glasses of red wine, rather than a lunch date in my opinion. Expect to pay around 30 pounds for two mains and a bottle of wine, although there is a cheaper, set-menu.

Favorite Dish: The house wine here goes down very well, there’s also plenty of choice should you be a wine expert. You could indeed just spend an evening here chatting away in a slightly transplanted French atmosphere with just drinks in hand.

I’ve tried the steak and French fries here and it was perfectly adequate for central London. The steak was nice, but very thin. Portion was adequate rather than great but I’m a little greedy in such meaty matters. Medallion of pork got a thumbs up, accompanying sauces were great.

Slight feeling of datedness and over pricing in the menu (we’re in London though…), but the place does have personality and friendly service - it’s kind of quirky and personal compared to many other Soho eateries, overall a good bet given its neighbours.
