    Belgo: Belgian Restaurant
  • Satisfaction:
  • Belgo's Central in Covent Garden is one of my favourite restaurants in town and also a lot of other peoples too as you can guarantee it will always be full and lively. And for for sometimes the service can suffer but the wait is worth it as the food here is lovely, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. The most popular dishes in Belgo's are the mussels (moules) but the steak is melt in your mouth! Not a place for a peaceful night out, the long tables and benches mean you may be crammed in next to someone but it's a must. The other thing the Belgians do really well is their beer and there is plenty of it to choose from, including flavoured beer, Fruili is my favourite (stawberry beer). The is also a bar on Kingsway (near Holborn Tube station) called Bierodrome. I recommend booking in advance too as it is very busy and you may have to wait in the bar above for a table, but then again it gives you time for sampling the beer :)

There are several Belgo restaurants in London these days. Founded in the 90s (by a Canadian and a Dane, I'm told) they have now sprung up all over the capital, be it as restaurant or bierodrome. Why on Earth would you eat Belgian in London? Because believe me, and I used to live in Belgium, they love their food. Moules frites - mussels and chips - are the main order of the day, naturally, but there is plenty more besides. But the main reason would be the BEER. Belgians love their beers, and make the best ones in the world, I kid you not. Belgo has a pretty big selection, thankfully including KWAK and FRUIT DEFENDU... see my Belgian pages for why.

There is this dish of a platter of mussels covered in cheese and spinach and it is GOOD!

Belgo: Get some Flemish down yer!
  • Satisfaction:
  • There are several Belgos in London now, along a couple of associated beer shops and bars. The restaurants serve fantastic authentic Belgian food and beer in a modern setting. Plus the staff are dressed as Trappiste monks! How cool is that?

Well I'm a steak and fries kinda guy, which they do very nicely (I'll have you know the Belgians invented fries not the French! That's my Flemish pride talking). The house speciality however, is the moules mariniers (mussels in onion soup). They also serve authentic Belgian beers.

Mussels and fries. Take advantage of the lunch time offer. Consistently good food.

    Belgo: A piece of Belgium
  • Satisfaction:
  • The place to go for cheap Moule frites and ace belgian beer. Very good valu eby London standards and they have branches all over. Lunch time menus are especially good value. If you're visiting then there's one near Covent Garden otherwise the only other one I've been too is in Chalk Farm/Camden.

    Belgo: Overrated
  • Satisfaction:
  • Belgo can be a fun night out but it has been a victim of its own success - you have to wait for ages to get a table and the service is sloppy. The quality can also be a bit hit-or-miss. Not a good destination for a romantic date - more for boozing with your mates (the beers are particularly good).

Belgo: Don't eat here if you're not hungry
  • Satisfaction:
  • Belgian food. Moules, frites, grilled chicken, sausages, and lots of beers. I like the beat the clock limited menu, where you pay the amount of the time you order (6pm = £6). The other menu is more expensive.

Sasages and stoemp. (mashed potato with vegetables in) The ultimate comfort food.

    Belgo: Belgian food in London
Other place where I was actually charged for a meal (but I did not complain since food was yummy) was Belgian restaurant 'Belgo Centraal' where I had a combo of four different types of sausages, but they all had one common ingredient - beer!!! Delicious. They also have around 50 types of belgian beers, I tried one that had around 10% alcohol and was very good. Dining room - Not much of an atmosphere. Place to eat and go.

Belgo: Belgian Food at Covent Garden
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a ware-house style beer hall that is always busy. If you find yourself in a queue, you will be placed in a pig pen with 30 other people. After being called, you will be escorted down to the actual restaurant (in the basement) and enjoy the buzz. Lots of exposed pipes and boxes of beer around.

Red Thai curry moules. Try this with raspberry beer.
