Belgo: The beer menu is longer than the actual menu!!
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you like Mussels, frites, and most def good beer- this is a Great place to go! There are actually 2 parts to this restaurant. What I would call the "canteen" side and the restaurant side. The "canteen" side is made up of large tables with benches where you end up sitting next to another party also having their meal. The waiters wear monk-like 'habits' and you feel like you are in a large brick cellar-which only adds to the amvbience of this place. This is great if you are a lone traveler--you can't feel like you are eating alone when you are at a table with 2 other parties eating too--plus sometimes you can strike up great conversation with those sitting around you! If you make a reservation or there isn't enough room on the "canteen" side, you sit at indvidual tables. (though i think the "canteen" side is better--but if you have a larger party or will be coming on a friday or weekend for dinner and you don't want to wait--I'd advize making a reservation) There is a "beat the clock" menu--this a special deal in which the time you order is the amount you pay. It's a great deal--you get a beer and a choice from I believe 5 entrees. Also 2 kids eat free off a mini-menu when an adult orders an entree off the main menu.

    Belgo: Mmmmm . . . Beeeeer!
  • Satisfaction:
  • There are actually two Belgos in London--Centraal, at Covent Garden, and Noord, at Chalk Farm. There is a Belgian monastery theme, with the waitstaff in monks' robes. Centraal has a slightly mysterious, spy-like feel as you enter through an empty upper level and are taken via industrial elevator into the basement dining room. The food is deliciously European/Belgian and the beers are many and magnificent. The menu even suggests which beer to have with which dishes (inculding dessert). I'm guessing on the prices!

I can't even remember what I had--it was seafood and it was good. If you like mussels, they serve them by the bucketful and every table seemed to be enjoying them. Don't miss the beer! Take the Tube so you sample to your heart's (and liver's) content.

    Belgo: Afternoon Tea
  • Satisfaction:
  • We went for afternoon tea at the Palm Court Restaurant. Even though it was lots more money than you would expect to pay it was a once in the lifetime experience. We started off with tea. There was a choice of about 10 different teas. I opted for Darjeeling whiilst my boyfriend went for strawberry tea. Then we were served sandwiches with different fillings such as smoked salmon, chicken and egg mayo. Then we had freshly baked scones with jam and then little cakes. Whilst this is going on there is a live harpist playing. The surroundings are really luxurious and definately something I'm not used to.

    Afternoon tea.

    Belgo: wonderful roast beef
  • Satisfaction:
  • voted ten out of ten in a recent Time Out review of Sunday Roasts to be had in London, the roast rib of Aberdeen Angus beef is the main course in the Grill Room's excellent value (for London - there's 12 % service extra!) Sunday Lunch - £32 for three courses plus coffee and petits fours, in what is one of London's top hotels - and it did not disappoint (see below). A starter of chicken liver and foie gras parfait with green beans and truffle bits, with toasted brioche on the side was good too, as was the lemon tart dessert. You've to dress up a little for the occasion though (it's supposed to have a smart/casual dress code) and the Scottish baronial style decor is quite grand but perhaps a little of an acquired taste. The wine list is very very long but reveals a few finds ensconced among the seriously pricey stuff.

Tender slices of really tasty medium rare beef (that's how we asked for it to be served to us), with all the trimmings: gravy, roast potatoes , parsnips, green beans and al dente broccoli, not to forget an impressive Yorkshire pud and dark gravy, and own made horseradish
